SLU Named to 2011 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll
Saint Louis University has once again been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.
This is the fourth consecutive year SLU has received the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and community engagement. The prestigious award honors exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth.
Service to others is a way of life at SLU. Not only a tenet of the University's Jesuit, Catholic mission, it is a choice that students, faculty and staff embrace, encourage and energetically support.
Each year, SLU volunteers share hundreds of thousands of service hours in the metropolitan community and through spring break mission trips across the country and sometimes around the world.
From year round programs at the University's Campus Kitchen, Casa de Salud and the Health Resource Center to special events and projects throughout the year such as Relay for Life and the Blue Santa Service Leadership toy drive, volunteers are sharing their time, talent and spirit of community.
Just a few of the highlights include:
- From August to April, Campus Kitchen volunteers spent 3,656 hours recovering 32,445 pounds of food to deliver 19,927 meals to those in need.
- Nearly $160,000 was raised during the 8th Annual SLU Relay for Life in April with more than $1 million raised by the SLU community over the eight years of the event.
- More than 150 children from five local elementary schools and community centers attended and received toys donated through the annual "Blue Santa" and service-leadership toy drives. Hundreds of toys were collected and nearly $2,000 was raised. Additional gifts were given to local foster care homes, women's shelters and community centers.
- 2,778 SLU students, faculty, staff, parents and alumni volunteered for projects ranging from painting to repairs and gardening to computer installation at more than 120 non-profit locations that included schools, churches and homes.
