Book Discussion Leaders Needed for Summer Reading Program
Each summer, first-year SLU students -- freshmen and transfers -- read a common book as a part of the First-Year Summer Reading program. When they arrive on campus in August for Welcome Week, students participate in a small discussion group about the book. Student Involvement needs faculty and staff who are interested in serving as small group discussion leaders around the themes of the first-year reading book.
The fall 2011 first-year students will read the book When the Emperor Was Divine by Julie Otsuka as one of their first academic experiences at Saint Louis University.
On Friday, Aug. 26, at 1:30 p.m. in the BSC Wool Ballrooms, students will engage in a program that introduces the themes of the book. Immediately following the session, students will be dismissed for their small group discussions, scheduled from 2:45-4 p.m. in various classrooms on campus.
If you would be interested in this opportunity to interact with incoming students before classes start in support of the First-Year Summer Reading program, please contact Susan Krieg at email@example.com or 977-1570 to be assigned as a student group facilitator.
Please include your name, department, campus address and e-mail address. You will receive a copy of the book.
The book discussion questions will be shared with you in August and added to the website. Resources for faculty/staff along with discussion leader guidelines are currently on the First-Year Summer Reading website.
The first-year summer reading program outcomes include: providing a shared intellectual experience that prepares incoming students to engage in discussion on various levels on an ongoing basis, addressing questions and life issues being faced by incoming students, either implicitly or explicitly introducing students to academic life and the uniqueness of Jesuit higher education, reflective of the mission of Saint Louis University, and providing opportunities for incoming students to dialogue with each other and faculty and staff on campus.
The author, Julie Otsuka, will speak to the campus community at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, in the Wool Ballroom in the BSC.
