More than 100 faculty, staff, residents, alumni and friends of the Center for Advanced Dental Education attended the 2011 American Association of Orthodontists Annual Conference.
The gathering offered a small preview of an alumni reception held at the conference that attracted more than 300 orthodontic alumni of the Center for Advanced Dental Education from locations as distant as Greece, Thailand, Brazil, Australia and Alaska.
The decision to travel by train was inspired by Gus Sotiropoulos, D.D.S., who places his confidence in travel on terra firma and prefers not to invite the risk of abruptly returning to earth from 35,000 feet altitude. There was no shortage of companions eager to join Dr. Gus and share in the camaraderie and comfort afforded by dual level luxury coach cars with lounge, dining and cafe accommodations.
At the conference Sotiropoulos was honored for his 69 years in the orthodontic profession and presented an outstanding lecture on orthodontic biomechanics to a full assembly of conferees.
He received a standing ovation before and after his presentation. Many other SLU orthodontic faculty also presented at the meeting, including Drs. Samson, Katavrias, Kim, Tsolakis, Gandini, Sander, Kandasamy, Alexander, Araujo, Walde, Bowman, Buschang, Miyajima, Harrison, and Cope.
Also honored at the conference, Rolf Behrents, D.D.S., Ph.D., executive director of CADE, received the Jarabak International Teachers Award for his contributions to education and research. It was a week of recognition for Behrents, having just been honored May 12 with the Endowed Lysle E. Johnston Jr. Professorship in Orthodontics during an investiture ceremony held in Pere Marquette Gallery, Saint Louis University.
The Center for Advanced Dental Education is home to one of the largest orthodontics program in the world and also offers advanced dental training in endodontics and periodontics. CADE has a proud tradition of excellence--one which strives to balance progressive excellence with the highest standards and the compassionate service of Saint Louis University's Catholic, Jesuit heritage.
