Live Well STL provided a forum for discussing the possibilities of driving substantial community health improvement by unifying regional efforts around a single health issue.
This open meeting, coordinated by the Midwest Health Initiative, explored how such work could be achieved and evaluated through an alignment of efforts from a broad set of stakeholders.
SLUCOR's Eric Armbrecht, Ph.D., and Thomas McAuliffe, MPA, of the Missouri Foundation for Health, co-led an interactive session with audience polling devices to facilitate discussion and refine the group's focus.
Using input from lively attendee discussion as well as survey data collected from more than 300 health care providers and community members, more than 80% meeting participants endorsed "obesity" as the unifying framework for a multi-stakeholder effort.
Small group discussions dove deeper into possible policy and behavioral interventions to influence physical activity and diet.
Mary Jo Condon from the Midwest Health Initiative acknowledged the many community health planning efforts underway in St. Louis, and remarked how the high level of participation from corporate leaders in discussions about public health concerns differentiated Live Well STL.
"Community health is a matter of economic development for the region," Armbrecht said. "The investment of employers in prevention and disease management, beyond offering subsidized health insurance to employees, will enhance reach and sustainability of efforts to improve human behaviors affecting health."
