Members of the University community welcomed thousands of incoming first-year and transfer students and their parents during this year's SLU 101 summer orientation programs.
Nine SLU 101 programs and four transfer orientations were offered throughout the spring and summer. A total of 1,637 new freshmen and approximately 1,915 of their parents visited the campus and 262 new transfer students attended the transfer orientation program.
During SLU 101, there are parallel programs for students and their parents. Highlights of the program for students include individual appointments with academic advisors, registering for fall courses, meeting with faculty in their school/college, taking placement tests, hearing from a panel of current students about their experiences and learning about campus resources and opportunities for involvement. Students cap off their experience with a night of social activities and staying overnight in a residence hall.
Parents attended sessions on topics such as the SLU academic experience, the college transition for parents, student services and had individual appointments with members of the student financial services staff to discuss their financial aid package.
Kent Porterfield, Ed.D. vice-president of student development, said SLU 101 provides a wonderful opportunity for connecting students, family and the SLU community.
"Our SLU 101 program is widely recognized as a ‘best practice' in higher education," Porterfield said. "Through SLU 101, we help students get better acclimated to the University and better positioned for success when they arrive for the fall semester."
Students and parents evaluated the orientation programs as very effective ways for them to accomplish multiple objectives as well as getting to know other members of the SLU community prior to the beginning of classes. Porterfield considers those evaluations a valuable resource.
"Each year we make improvements to the program based on the feedback we receive from incoming students and parents as well as input from the campus community," Porterfield said.
The program is supported by the Student Involvement Center, the Office of Admission and the academic advising offices.
The success of the program can be attributed to the involvement and support from various faculty, staff and students across campus who welcomed the new members of the SLU family.
Thanks go out to all members of the SLU community who participated and supported the "SLU 101" Summer Orientation program.
