SLU Surgeon Named Honorary Visiting Professor in Beijing
Abdulrauf Teaches Chinese Neurosurgeons about High-Blood Flow Brain Bypass
On a recent trip to China to teach surgeons about the procedure he created, SLU chair of neurosurgery, Saleem Abdulrauf, M.D, was recognized as honorary visiting professor at the flagship Beijing neurosurgery center.

The Neurosurgery Center of Beijing Tiantan Hospital is a large facility dedicated to complex problems. With 110 neurosurgeons, the hospital serves all of China, performing 9403 surgeries in 2010 alone.
“In China, if you have a complex problem, this is where you go,” Abdulrauf said. “The Chinese do an impressive job. They’ve really invested in this new hospital, with every technology you can imagine.”
While in China, Abdulrauf made rounds and spoke to 400 neurosurgeons about the high-flow brain bypass technique he developed. Used for complex aneurysms and tumors deep in the base of the skull, the advanced procedure means improved outcomes for patients. His technique is less invasive and keeps more blood flowing in the brain than previous surgeries.
Following Abdulrauf’s visit, China plans to send senior surgeons to Saint Louis University to spend several months training with him. After they return home, Abulrauf will visit again to assist the first time the procedure is performed in China.
“Saint Louis University has a strong international presence when it comes to neurosurgery,” Abdulrauf said. “As a center for international referrals, we see the difficult cases that can’t be treated elsewhere. As such, we’re committed to sharing our medical expertise. We train and teach young neurosurgeons from around the globe.
“Teaching surgeons is doubly rewarding,” Abdulrauf said. “It’s a special thing to think of the lives you save that you never meet.”
