Chris Chavez, Ph.D., assistant professor of communication at Saint Louis University, will present "The ties that bind: U.S. Hispanic advertising and the tension between global and local forces."
In this talk, Chavez explores the nature of cultural production in a global context by focusing on interrelations within the advertising industry. Using Bourdieu's field theory as an analytical framework, the talk discusses how Hispanic agencies are sustained by human and economic resources that flow in an out of national boundaries.
Despite these global connections, Chavez argues that Hispanic agencies are beholden to social hierarchies at the local level which ultimately determine the nature of cultural production. This will be the inaugural Department of Communication Colloquium Series event.
