The Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies is proud to announce that this year's annual lecture will be delivered by the distinguished medieval historian, Robert Somerville of Columbia University, at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, in the Pere Marquette Gallery of DuBourg Hall.
Somerville will present "Pope Urban II (1088-99): Councils, Canons (... and also the First Crusade)." A wine and cheese reception will follow.
Somerville is the Tremaine Professor of Religion and professor of history at Columbia University. His extensive list of publications includes Pope Alexander II and the Council of Tours (Univ. of California Press, 1977); Scotia Pontificia: Papal Letters to Scotland before the Pontificate of Innocent III (Oxford, 1982); Pope Urban II, the Collectio Britannica, and the Council of Melfi (1089) (Oxford, 1996), Prefaces to Canon Law Books in Latin Christianity (Yale, 1998), and Pope Urban II's Council of Piacenza (Oxford, 2011).
