Robert K. Dorton, M.D., 1933-2011
Robert K. Dorton, M.D., (‘65) a former clinical professor of internal medicine at Saint Louis University, passed away on Dec. 12. He was 78.
Dr. Dorton's medical career started and ended at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. He completed his residency and a postdoctoral research fellowship at SLU in 1965, and taught here for nearly 40 years. He was honored by the Missouri Medical Society and the American College of Physicians for his service to the University.
"One of the most notable things about Dr. Dorton was his involvement and commitment to Saint Louis University," said Raymond Slavin, M.D., clinical director of allergy and professor of internal medicine at SLU.
"He was a very busy community physician, yet he remained involved at SLU throughout his career, and even after he retired from private practice. He was a dedicated and effective teacher. In addition to serving as a preceptor for third-year medical students, he taught physical diagnosis. He was just terrific, loyal as can be."
According to Thomas Olsen, M.D., director of general internal medicine at SLU, Dr. Dorton found joy in his role as a preceptor for third-year medical students.
"Dr. Dorton liked working with the students; there was a mutual need there. He enjoyed interacting with the students and sharing his knowledge with them, and students enjoyed his enthusiasm and ever-present smile," Olsen said.
Dr. Dorton was well known in the community. He had a successful private practice and served as president of the medical staffs at St. Mary's Health Center and the former Deaconess Hospital. He also served terms as president of both the St. Louis Internist Club and the St. Louis Society of Internal Medicine.
He received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University in 1959 and completed an internship at Ohio State University in 1960.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 16, at Salem in Ladue University Methodist Church, 1200 South Lindbergh Blvd.
Dr. Dorton was survived by his wife of 51 years, Ingrid, son J. David Dorton, two daughters, Dorothy Kittner and Deborah Dolan, a brother, two sisters and 11 grandchildren.
