Fraternity/Sorority Life Task Force
Task Force History:
In 2008, students from the fraternity/sorority community met to develop a Greek Life Mission, Vision, and Strategic Plan. The group surveyed current members and non-members and held a retreat with an outside facilitator to assist in identifying the community's strengths, areas of improvements, opportunities, and threats. This information led the group to identifying the areas of academics, risk management, recruitment, retention/graduation, spiritual/personal growth, and community relations as the six priority areas. The group developed strategies to achieve success in the priority areas with the majority of deadlines set to be completed in 2009. Students and staff were able to implement some changes as they related to the strategic plan, such as annual attendance at the Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values conference, annual evaluation of the recruitment process, maintaining the fraternity/sorority community use of DeMattias Hall for community living.
In the summer of 2011, the Student Involvement Center hired a consultant to work with them to address high risk behaviors occurring in the fraternity/sorority community. Based upon interactions with students and staff, the consultant recommended forming a committee of students and staff to partner together to establish an understanding of what it means to be a fraternity/sorority at Saint Louis University. It was determined that understanding what makes fraternity/sorority life different not only at a Jesuit institution, but specifically at Saint Louis University would be a benefit to the community. Feedback from the consultant included a recommendation to determine how chapters are valued at the University, define what it means to be a fraternity/sorority, and identify supports for the chapters.
Based upon feedback from the consultant as well as the high staff turnover in the summer of 2011 it was determined that a committee representing all areas of fraternity/sorority life at the University should come together to answer the question, "What does it mean to be a fraternity man or sorority woman at Saint Louis University?' In addition to answering this question, a task force was believed to be able to help identify ways to integrate the answer into current systems within the fraternity/sorority community to ensure the community continues to align with the University's mission and Jesuit values.
Task Force Charge:
The Fraternity/Sorority Life Task force is charged to examine what defines the fraternity and sorority life experience, what it means to be a fraternity man/sorority woman at Saint Louis University, and how the fraternity/sorority experience enhances SLU's educational experience. Utilizing SLU's Jesuit values, in conjunction with espoused fraternal values, the FSLTF will make recommendations to help develop socially and personally responsible fraternity/sorority students and a principle-driven interfraternal community.
