The Dietetic Internship at Saint Louis University accepts 34 interns annually into five concentration areas: Nutrition Therapy, Culinary Entrepreneurship, Nutrition and Physical Performance, Pediatric Nutrition, and Public Health Nutrition.
The application process for the concentrations are separate and competitive. Applicants may apply to one or both internship concentration areas. Applicants should submit only one application regardless if they are applying to both concentrations; however, a separate application letter for each concentration is required. Further specialization within the emphasis areas are available but are limited in some of the areas to the number indicated below. A brief description of the internship concentrations are listed below*:
Medical Nutrition Therapy (Matching Code: 170)
The Nutrition Therapy (NT) concentration accepts fourteen (14) interns annually. The NT concentration area encompasses all the components of dietetics with additional rotations in acute care facilities, nutritional support, research, and home health care. Interns are placed in acute care facilities for clinical, pediatric, and geriatric rotations. The nutrition support and medical/surgical rotations are 3 weeks and include NG placement, ICU nutrition, and enteral/parenteral nutrition home care. Foodservice rotations will be completed in hospital settings. Community rotations include outpatient Medical Nutrition Therapy rotations. Clinical Staff Relief is completed in an acute care facility in critical care nutrition.
Culinary Entrepreneurship (Matching Code: 170)
A culinary emphasis is available to interns matched into the Nutrition Therapy Concentration and who have graduated from a culinary program. The purpose of the culinary emphasis is to meet the increasing demand for dietitians interested in culinary arts, sustainable food systems and their applications in community support services, preventative health initiatives, and therapeutic nutrition interventions. Interns will be placed in hospitals, ambulatory facilities, and schools for clinical, pediatric, and geriatric rotations. Foodservice rotations will be completed in a variety of settings that offer advanced culinary practice. Community rotations include a rotation in a food bank, ambulatory care facility, and a culinary specialty rotation. Clinical Staff Relief will be completed in facilities that provide healthy, local food (hospitals, schools, food bank, community settings).
Nutrition and Physical Performance (Matching Code: 168)
The Nutrition and Physical Performance (NPP) concentration accepts eight (8) interns annually. The NPP concentration area encompasses all the components of dietetics with additional opportunities in nutrition in physical performance, cooperate wellness, and health promotion. Interns are placed in community hospitals, ambulatory facilities, rehabilitation units, and schools for clinical, pediatric, and geriatric rotations. Foodservice rotations are completed in schools. Community rotations include a 3 week rotation in an exercise facility, athletic department, and a NPP specialty rotation. Clinical Staff Relief is completed in an exercise, sports, or rehabilitation unit.
Pediatric / Medical Nutrition (Matching Code: 169)
The Pediatric Nutrition (PN) concentration accepts six (6) interns annually. The PN concentration area encompasses all the components of dietetics with additional opportunities in pediatric acute care and community programs. The pediatric rotation, nutrition support and clinical staff relief rotations are completed in acute care pediatric facilities. Foodservice rotations are completed in schools and pediatric hospitals. Community rotations include WIC, Head Start and a choice week (OB, research, eating disorders, pediatric rehabilitation, etc.).
Public Health Nutrition (Matching Code: 407)
The Public Health (PH) concentration accepts six (6) interns annually. The PH concentration area encompasses all the components of dietetics with additional opportunities in public policy and health advocacy. Interns are placed in community hospitals/clinics, ambulatory facilities, rehabilitation units, and schools for clinical, pediatric, and geriatric rotations. Foodservice rotations are completed in city schools. Community rotations include a 2 week rotation in public policy in the SLU School of Public Health; a 3 week rotation is a city health department, extension unit, or food bank; and a 4 week rotation in a WIC clinic. Clinical Staff Relief is completed in a public health setting.
To enter any of the internship concentrations, completion of a Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited university or college and coursework approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND). There is NO APPLICATION FEE for the SLU Dietetic Internship program.
A phone interview will be conducted by one or more members of the selection committee. The interview will last twenty to thirty minutes and will cover the following topic areas:

The applications to the Dietetic Internship and Graduate school are separate application processes. The application for the graduate school should be initiated after the applicant has been accepted into the Internship. There is a $40.00 graduate school application fee. Applicant matching results will be posted on http://www.dnddigital.com/ on appointment day. This is the ONLY source of notification for applicants. Each applicant will receive either ONE MATCH or NO MATCH after Log In. All applicants who receive ONE MATCH will find the matched DI program name and contact information to accept the matched appointment. Matched applicants must contact the DI Program on Notification or Appointment Day to confirm acceptance of the MATCH. No arrangements should be made with any other DI programs.
Matched applicants to the SLU Dietetic Internship must contact the Dietetic Internship Director, Karen Steitz, by telephone at (314) 977-8523, to confirm acceptance of the MATCH. After this time, the program is under no obligation to hold the opening for the matched applicant.
A letter will be sent to appointees confirming the dietetic internship appointment. Appointees must also respond in writing within 48 hours of the telephone communication of their acceptance or rejection of the appointment.
