Meet Karen Steitz, Dietetic Internship Director and Assistant Professor for the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Saint Louis University. Karen earned her Bachelor of Science in Dietetics in the Coordinated Program (CP) from Virginia Tech University and her Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition from the University of Kentucky. She has worked clinically for 23 years as both a pediatric and nutrition support team dietitian and has been the director of SLU's internship for seven years
As the dietetic internship director, Karen has a variety of roles and responsibilities. She coordinates the supervised practice rotations and sites, organizes didactic educational sessions, provides clinical mentoring, and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses. Karen's involvement, continuous support, and dedication to the internship program are what many graduates of the internship attribute to their professional success.
Karen is active in the state and local dietetic associations. She was a 2008 recipient of the Missouri Dietetic Outstanding Educator Award, the 2010 Doisy College of Health Sciences Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award, and the 2012 Nutrition and Dietetics Educators and Preceptors (NDEP) Outstanding Educator for a Dietetic Internship awarded by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND).
