John Schweiss, M.D., a retired professor of surgery and pediatrics and the first chair of the anesthesia section in the department of surgery at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, passed away Tuesday, May 22. He was 86.

Dr. Schweiss was a graduate of SLU's School of Medicine ('48) who completed his internship at St. Mary's Hospital in St. Louis and residency at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.
In 1952, Dr. Schweiss joined the SLU faculty in the department of surgery where he taught until his retirement in 1996. In addition, he was the Chief of Anesthesiology at Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center until his retirement . He also was a physician with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
During his more than 40 years at the University, he was a professor of surgery and pediatrics in the anesthesiology section where he served as the first chairman of the group.
Gary Haynes, M.D., Ph.D., chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, reflected the views of many of his colleagues who had worked with Dr.Schweiss.
"He was greatly loved and highly respected because of his intellect and commitment to the department of anesthesiology and our specialty," Haynes said. "He was a giant among giants when it came to doctors who made SLU an outstanding place."
Dr. Schweiss is survived by his wife, Mary Virginia Jeanne; and his children Barry, Brian, Deirdre, Maureen and Gavin.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, May 24, at Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Road in Kirkwood, Mo. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 25, at St. Clement Catholic Church, 1510 Bopp Road.
