Santiago Study Center
Universidad Alberto Hurtado, one of the most prestigious and competitive universities in Chile, hosts the SLU Chile program. Founded in 1977, and with more than 1,500 undergraduate and graduate students, this exclusive institution offers classes in communications, business, psychology, education, humanities, journalism, sociology and more.
Students live with Chilean host families in private residences and may share a room with another student. This housing situation is ideal for students who want to improve their Spanish language skills. A meal plan is included.
Please note: 10 Chilean credit hours are equivalent to 3 credit hours at SLU. Therefore, all students must enroll in at least four 10-credit-hour classes in Chile, which are equivalent to 12-credit hours at SLU.
Students are to consult with their Academic Department regarding all course approvals. Students will not view the course schedule or register until arrival in Chile and are instructed to email all prospective course descriptions (translated in English) to their Academic Department for approval.
All students enroll in a required Three week intensive Spanish Immersion Course (10 Chilean hours) before beginning classes at UAH (waived for Spanish-speaking natives). Upon conclusion of the Spanish course, fall-semester students will immediately start classes, and spring-semester students will have a one-month vacation before courses begin in March.
UAH typically offers the course, Poverty and Development, which they cross-list as both a Political Science and a Theology course. The course is 20 Chilean Credits which is typically 6 U.S. credits. If you are interested in this course, please discuss with your Academic Dean and Mentor to see if this would fit in your course plan.
