This semester, there's a new and improved field to use at Saint Louis University.
Grass on the space located at the corner of Vandeventer and Laclede avenues was pulled up and re-turfed this summer to increase the field's shelf life and shorten its rest time. The project was conceived and moved forward by the Student Government Association.
The field, which was frequently in use by Campus Recreation intramural and club teams, as well as pick-up games, often had be closed for repairs and re-sodding. Students requested that the field be covered with an artificial turf because it holds up better under heavy use.
"One of the advantages to the turf is that it's been improved over the years," said Eric Anderson, director of Campus Recreation. "Although it is artificial, it looks natural."
"The big advantage is pure playable hours," Anderson continued. "It doesn't need the time to rest like natural grass does."
The field has been marked for soccer and flag-football, but will be available for other use, including intermural and club team, and unofficial "drop-in" play.
Last fall, 179 teams were registered with Campus Recreation and more than 1,500 participants took part in club and intermural athletics. Visit the Campus Recreation website to learn more about recreation opportunities or to join a team.
