The SLU Equestrian Team will launch its inaugural competition season as part of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 13-14 at Hunter Oaks Equestrian Center in Carlock, Ill., and hosted by Illinois State University.
Competing for SLU are Mackenzie Daniels (nursing), Anna Johnson (public health), Emma Tessier (Doisy College of Health Sciences), Mallika Jai, Caitlin Grombka-Murphy and Lauren Lovato (all of Arts and Sciences).
The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association's goal is for any college student to participate in horse shows regardless of current riding ability or financial status. To that end, students compete on borrowed horses at the competition venue, stressing the ability of the rider to get to know the horse very quickly and to be able to ride a wide variety of horses. Team members are evaluated by their coaches at Gold Farm at the beginning of the season to place them in the appropriate skill groups for safe competition. The SLU team will have riders competing at walk/trot/canter (no fences), novice fences (for those with a minimum of six months of continuous training) and intermediate fences (jumping up to 3 feet, 6 inches). All SLU horse enthusiasts are encouraged to come cheer on the Billiken equestrians.
Living the SLU mission, the team provides service assistance to Equine Assisted Therapy for Make a Difference Day and throughout the year.
