When it comes to laptop security, physical security of the equipment is the first step in protecting against laptop and data theft. There are two options ITS suggests for student use:
Kingston Locks offers several physical lock options, keyed or combination portable locks for student laptops. This type of security provides a cable and lock attaches to laptop via the Kensington Security Slot found in 99% of computers and then tether to a non-moveable object, suck as a desk leg.
LoJack for Laptops features remote data and device security to prevent use of a lost laptop, protect privacy remotely, and map a laptop's location. The service includes a dedicated theft recovery team that works with local law enforcement to track a stolen laptop.
There are pro's and con's to either choice, parents and students need to seriously consider the differences and choose the option that will better fit individual students.
