On Friday, March 1, the second annual Icing on the Cake Day will once again recognize the contributions of the University’s many donors who help make it possible for students to receive a SLU education. Due to the predicted weather, the event will be held just inside the north entrance of Busch Student Center.
Why March 1? This is the symbolic day in which tuition dollars are exhausted and donor support kicks in to make the remainder of the academic year possible. Tuition only covers 73 percent of what it costs to educate one student, so donor support helps to supplement that difference.
“Since donors help to support tuition for students, they are the icing on the cake for our SLU experience,” said Danielle Huster, junior and co-chair of the Class Legacy Program.
This year’s event is also expected to be more interactive for the students.
“We will have visual aids displayed around the tent showing how much our donors impact SLU and its students,” Huster said. “We are hoping this year’s event will have more participation than last year’s, which had hundreds of students signing our huge thank-you card.”
As a way of saying thank you to the students for helping, each student who signs the large thank-you card receives a piece of cake. Students will also have the opportunity to send a personal message to donors via video or email.
Last year nearly 500 pieces of cake were handed out and the oversized card became a rainbow of colorful signatures and messages from students. Throughout the year, the card was then displayed at different SLU events.
“It was a hugely successful event last year. We are hoping to have even more students wanting to sign the card,” said LaVerne Robinson, assistant director of Annual Giving Programs. “Any time we can give our students the opportunity to thank our donors, it makes them more appreciative of their generosity.”
Also by signing the card, students will receive a coupon to several local businesses that are offering discounts for today only to help celebrate generosity.
This year’s participating businesses are Crave, Humphrey’s Restaurant and Tavern, Pickleman’s, Flying Cow, Hamburger Mary’s Bar & Grille and The Shack Pubgrub.
The cakes for the event are being donated by Lubeley’s Bakery and Fresh Gatherings Café. The Class Legacy Program and the department of Annual Giving Programs is co-sponsoring the event.
