Cardinals Care & Dept. of Communication partnership launched!
A new opportunity has arrived for communication
students at Saint Louis University -- The Youth
Helping Youth program. It is a partnership between
the Department of Communication and Cardinals
Care. The program is dedicated to giving
communication students the opportunity to give back
to the community. One of the ways students can get
involved is through the Cardinals Care Practicum
class (CMM 493).
"This is a great opportunity for students to experience a life
of giving back." said Christopher Lepp, the practicum instructor
and director of the Youth Helping Youth program at Saint Louis
University. The practicum is also another way Cardinals Care
reaches out to youth in the area.
"The program that we have with SLU...students come and help
us tell our story and having students come and essentially help
these kids, all the kids we support through Cardinals Care." said
Michael Hall, Vice President of Community Relations and Executive
Director of Cardinals Care.
This year, five communication students were selected for the practicum,
based on their previous classwork and professionalism. The students
write scripts, cover events such as the Winter Warm-Up, and produce
multimedia projects that tell the Cardinals Care story. Students work as
a team, but also take on leadership roles, including head photographer,
social media coordinator, chief videographer, head writer and lead editor.
"The Cardinals Care Practicum has allowed me to gain real-world experience
in a classroom setting," said Annalise Wilcox, the student who serves as the
head photographer. "I have been able to use my academic skills in order to
give back to the community.
Other members of the practicum include Head Videographer Jennifer Allison,
Social Media Coordinator Grace Bonoma, Lead Editor Jordan Hammermann
and Head Writer Erica Miller.
The program also included an Advanced Independent Study this semester.
Student Kevin Lawder was chosen as the lead graphic designer. He designed a
10th Anniversary logo for Redbird Rookies, the Cardinals Care youth baseball
league. The 10th Anniversary logo will be used on all Redbird Rookies hats,
t-shirts, banners and publications.
The practicum is structured so that students learn from each other under Lepp's
supervision. "We each perform our individual role and in turn share our knowledge
with the class," said student Grace Bonoma, who is the social media coordinator.
As a part of the social media campaign for the practicum, students have chronicled
their weekly efforts through a class blog. The blog provides a behind-the-scenes
look at the activities of the Cards Care Team relaying stories of both trial and triumph.
Students also use SLU's state-of-the-art audio/visual studio in the Department of
Communication. During the class, various Cardinals executives were interviewed
about the story of Cardinals Care. The interviews are included in the class's final videos.
The Youth helping Youth program will continue over the summer with the addition of
two internships. These internships are only available to communication students at
Saint Louis University. Students can learn more about the program by contacting

Cardinals Care's mission is to care for kids. This mission is accomplished by giving
cash grants to other non-profit organizations that support kids and through Redbird
Rookies. Cardinals Care has awarded nearly $19 million in support of non-profit,
youth-oriented organizations. Cardinals Care is responsible for the construction of 20
youth ball fields in local neighborhoods and work to serve more than 4,500 kids

Call for Proposals: Try It! Summer Mini-Grants for Faculty

Reenergize your teaching?
Reinvigorate some aspect of an existing course?
Revitalize student engagement in your classes?
If so, a Try It! Summer Mini-Grant may be just the thing for you.
Large-scale transformation can be a daunting prospect, and a complete course redesign isn't always feasible. That's why the Reinert Center for Transformative Teaching & Learning is piloting a new grant program this summer to spur thoughtful experimentation with just one new pedagogical tool or strategy. Through this initiative, the Center aims to support faculty members' development as teacher-scholars by promoting innovative thinking about and approaches to teaching, learning, and student engagement. The program is designed to fund small-scale pedagogical projects that can have an immediate impact on student learning and engagement.
Full-time SLU faculty who hold permanent appointments in any department of the University, and who will be continuing in their faculty positions for at least the 2013-2014 academic year, are invited to apply. Although most proposals will be submitted by individuals, inter- or intra-disciplinary projects that involve two or more faculty members are encouraged.
Try It! funds may be used to purchase equipment and/or materials that enhance teaching effectiveness and/or student engagement. (Grant funds may not be used for: stipends or other payment to students, faculty, or staff; and/or expenses related to travel.) Grants of up to $1,500 are available for summer 2013 and can be applied to a range of materials and technologies that support student learning and engagement. Grant recipients will work closely with a member of the Reinert Center to determine effective ways to incorporate one new strategy or tool into their teaching and will share what they learn from their experiment with the broader SLU community.
The grant award period is summer 2013, with the new tool or strategy to be implemented in a class taught in fall 2013 or spring 2014. Grant purchases must be made and received by the CTTL no later than June 30, 2013 (the end of the fiscal year). However, consultations with Reinert Center staff may continue throughout the summer and into the 2013-2014 academic year as needed.Proposals are due Monday, May 20, 2013. 2013 SLU Archaeological Field School
May 20-June 14 at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, just across the Mississippi River in Collinsville, IL.
Cahokia is a prehistoric American Indian chiefdom and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Dr. Mary Vermilion has been a researcher there for the past 13 years and would like to extend an invitation to the SLU community to come and visit, view the excavations, and learn about this amazing site.
Last summer they had visits from the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, an elder hostel, a group from the Field Museum of Natural History, a Montessori school, and parents of the field school students.
Visitors should wear sturdy shoes, a hat, and sun screen. They sometimes even allow visitors to help screen the dirt, so gardening gloves are also recommended.

Register Now for the CTTL's Online Teaching & Learning Institute
Preparing to teach online? The Paul C. Reinert, S.J.Center for
Transformative Teaching and Learning (CTTL) is happy to
announce its fourth Online Teaching & Learning Institute (OTLI)
scheduled for this summer, July 29-August 2. The weeklong Institute
runs from 9 AM - 4 PM, Monday-Friday, in the Learning Studio
(Des Peres Hall, Room 213).
The Institute is free and open to full-time faculty at Saint Louis University;
however, registration is required and limited to 12 participants. Priority
seating is given to those faculty members who are scheduled to teach an online or
blended course in 2013-2014; fo r those who can attend the full week of the Institute;
and for those who have not yet participated in the Institute.
The Institute will also explore, discuss, and share strategies central to teaching online:
- Moving Online: Effective Practices
- Curating Course Content for Learning
- Web Accessibility / Universal Design for Instruction
- Collaborative and Active Learning Strategies
- Online Assessment Practices
- Instructional Design Consultations
- Participant-led Work Time and Discussions
Faculty who complete the Institute will receive a Certificate in
Online Teaching from the Center and a copy of the book, Continuing
to Engage the Online Learner: More Activities and Resources for Creative
Instruction (2012) by Rita-Marie Conrad and J. Ana Donaldson.
The Online Teaching & Learning Institute does fill up early, so please
register in advance. Registration will close once we have 12 participants.

Information Technology Services upgraded the current SLU Global Service Pack 7 to Blackboard Learn 9.1
Service Pack 11 (SP11) on Saturday, May 18. SLU Global was unavailable from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. that day.
The learning management system has been renamed Blackboard Learn.
What was included in the May 18 upgrade to SLU Global?
- The name "SLU Global" has going away. The learning management system is now referred to as
simply "Blackboard Learn." Customers may also see this abbreviated as "Bb Learn."
- The system was upgraded from Service Pack 7 to Service Pack 11. This included several new features, as
communicated in Newslink and on the ITS website.
- The URL (i.e. link) for the system changed from global.slu.edu to blackboard.slu.edu.
Users will continue to be able to access Bb Learn from the Tools tab of mySLU.
- Faculty Support information for Bb Learn moved to a new home under the ITS website.
- Respondus upgraded to version 4.0.5.04, and new settings to connect to Blackboard Learn
will be released.
