SLUCare medical geneticists provide diagnostic evaluation and advanced care for children and adults with known or suspected genetic disorders. We provide genetic counseling regarding prognosis, recurrence risk and implications for patients and family members. Our specialists offer prenatal counseling at the Maternal and Fetal Care Center at SSM St. Mary's Health Center, and in the St. Louis Fetal Care Institute at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center.
More than 15,000 genetic disorders have been identified in the medical literature. Our doctors make use of special clinical genetics diagnostic databases to help identify and confirm rare syndromes and metabolic disorders.
Common reasons patients are referred to SLUCare geneticists include:
Common reasons expectant mothers are seen by medical geneticists include advanced maternal age, abnormal maternal serum screening, fetal abnormalities identified on ultrasound, teratogen exposure or a family history of a genetic disorder.
SLUCare medical geneticists also see adult patients for diagnostic evaluations and/or pre-symptomatic testing for genetic disorders. We also offer cancer genetics assessments and recurrence risk counseling for patients with cancer and their families.
