ST. LOUIS — Saint Louis University celebrated the opening of Joe and Loretta Scott Hall, the new home of its nationally ranked School of Law - with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and building blessing Aug. 16 in downtown St. Louis.
"Joe and Loretta Scott Hall marks an exciting new chapter in the life of our School of Law," University President Lawrence Biondi, S.J., told a large crowd of local civic leaders, other dignitaries and members of the SLU community. "It also reflects another significant SLU investment in our St. Louis Metropolitan Region."
That investment was applauded by St. Louis Mayor Francis G. Slay, who is a 1980 graduate of SLU's law school. During his remarks, Slay praised the University, and Father Biondi in particular, for the transformation of SLU's Midtown neighborhood.
"Today we celebrate a new Saint Louis University investment in our city and a commitment that's tremendous," Slay said. "I expect this investment to add to the vitality of this part of our city."
School of Law Dean Michael Wolff, J.D., a former chief justice of the Missouri Supreme Court, noted that the school's new location is within walking distance of court buildings, many top law firms, and government offices and agencies.
"Our move to this downtown location is not just a change of location and an upgrade to a state-of-the art new facility, but a profound transformation in our ability to teach, to learn and to become fully integrated within the legal profession," Wolff said.
Three Missouri elected officials who are SLU law alumni — Rep. Mike Colona, Sen. Joseph Keaveny and Sen. Eric Schmitt — were on hand to present resolutions from the Missouri General Assembly that honor the history, tradition and many accomplishments of the School of Law.
Following his remarks, Biondi continued a longtime University tradition and asked for God's blessings on Scott Hall. After the building blessing, Biondi and others cut the ribbon to symbolically open the new building.
SLU recently completed $32 million in renovations and upgrades to the 12-story building located at 100 N. Tucker Blvd. The Lawrence Group designed the space, while Clayco, Inc. served as the general contractor for the project, which was overseen by SLU's design and construction team.
Scott Hall is named in honor of Joe and Loretta Scott, St. Louisans who donated the building to SLU in 2012. For more information about the building, visit the School of Law website.
