Good morning! With the scheduled reduction of available parking on campus
and the trial balloon proposal
to raise parking rates, I would like to propose that the powers that be consider re-vamping our current regressive parking fee structure in favor of a more progressive approach that will reduce the negative impact that a parking rate increase would have on SLU's lower-income faculty and staff. Currently, 3.1% of my gross pay goes toward parking (in the Laclede garage). I'm happy to pay that for the safety/security of the garage, especially after dark and during inclement weather. Parking in the garage also allows me to be able to spend more quality time with my family (one of the reasons why I enjoy working for SLU).
My suggestion would be to charge faculty and staff who choose to park on campus a flat percentage (3%) of their gross pay (similar to the way payroll deducts money for our 403b contributions). This should enable Parking and Card Services to generate more funds for improving on-campus parking and facilities, in general. And it would affect the lower-income employees the least, since they are already paying 3-4% of their gross pay for on-campus parking.

Since the start of construction on the new residence hall we have had to rearrange parking areas to accommodate those affected by the closure. Although we temporarily lost some space, we were able to utilize other areas and maintain space availability.
I am confused as to what you are referring to regarding the trial balloon proposal to raise parking rates because we have not had any discussions about raising parking rates. The link you provided was to a transportation website, but if you have additional information that you can provide us we will certainly would look into it.
SLU currently has a program to benefit employees who qualify for a subsidy. They not only provide discounted medical benefits but also provide a discounted parking rate. A discount of $100 per year is given to those who qualify for the subsidy and choose the general parking option. The total is $520.00 per year with the subsidy.
When discussing ways to improve parking we do consider the input that we receive through this forum. We understand your concerns and appreciate your feedback.

Feedback Regarding Parks College, (10/28/2014)
RESPONSE: Thank you for using the Communication Feedback Tool. Since its launch in January 2014, the tool has been promoted a number of times in the SLU Newslink email, which all students receive. However, based on your feedback, we will explore additional ways in the spring semester to make students aware of the tool — student input is very important to the University. In terms of its effectiveness, there have been submissions that have led to process improvements at the University, and a number of other suggestions are under review. Students are encouraged to use the tool if they have questions or concerns to share.
SUBMISSION: I am a little disappointed with my experience here at Saint Louis University. I chose to come to this university because Park's College has a reputation of being a good engineering school. After being here for three semesters, I have noticed the university seems to neglect the engineering department. Our computer lab has outdated computers (Windows 7 was last released 3 years ago), broken keyboards, and many broken chairs. Furthermore, there is a lack of astronautical engineering classes. There are several of us in the 2015 Aerospace Engineering graduating class that want to concentrate on astronautical engineering, but there are very few classes offered. Most of the electives offered are closely related to research areas of certain professors (parachutes, for example), but there are very few students that are interested in said classes. Finally, I believe it would be beneficial to the students for a larger emphasis to be placed on engineering design. The only time we are really introduced to actual design work is in senior design, which seems a little late to be starting something that is a major part of the career field. Thank you for your time. Inquiry About University Notifications of Death, (10/24/2014)
RESPONSE: Thank you for using the feedback tool. Your submission has been shared with the leadership of Parks College, and someone will be in touch with you to discuss your concerns.
SUBMISSION: Why wasn't there a University-wide communication about the recent loss of a son by our SLU colleague? Per HR policy, "we support each other during times of loss, reaching out with compassion to our colleagues when a loved one passes away." Though there were many emails about campus protests related to the young man's death, there was no mention of the fact that his father works at SLU and should receive our compassion for his loss. Like previous University notifications of deaths in our colleagues' families, no details of the cause of death would have needed to be given, but information on the visitation and burial, as well as a reminder to keep our colleague in our thoughts and prayers, could have been shared. Pius Library Drop-Off Box, (9/26/2014)
RESPONSE: Thank you for using SLU's Suggestion Feedback Tool. Often time, we in HR do not hear of someone's loss unless a member of their department notifies us. Several times we did not hear about a loss until after a funeral or memorial service. We send notices to VPs and Deans. It is up to them to filter the information down to their staff. We no longer send to all faculty/staff.
SUBMISSION: I was wondering if anyone has suggested a drop-off box for Pius Library that would be stationed in the circle driveway. It would have a lock to ensure safety and during the hours when it wouldn't be monitored the opening could be locked to prevent any books collecting for an extended period of time. This could alleviate the shortage of parking spots available in the circle for those who just want to drop and go. The hours of availability and pick up times could be posted on the box like a postal mailbox. Thank you for your consideration. (9/26/2014)
Metro Bus Stop, (9/26/2014)
RESPONSE: We appreciate the suggestion and will review its feasibility.
SUBMISSION: I ride the bus, as do several faculty, staff, and students. May we please have a trash can placed at the Metro Bus stop that is along the campus? People are throwing all their trash on the ground and it looks very bad. I am taking about the stop that is on Grand on the west side of the street closest to DuBourg. They moved that stop down from College Church because of the new articulate buses needed for the 70 bus. I believe Metro placed a bench at the new stop, however, we have no trash can. I'm not sure if that is a SLU issue or a Metro issue. On another note, would SLU approve a shelter in the area where the bench is located to help during bad weather? I believe this is a Metro issue, however, I imagine SLU will have to approve first. Thank you in advance for your consideration. (9/26/2014)
Pius XII Memorial Libraries Bathroom Facilities, (9/5/2014)
RESPONSE: Thank you for your concern in this regard. We are discussing with Metro on the shelter and trash can placement. We will update once we have received an answer.
SUBMISSION: A few years ago the restrooms in Pius Library were "refreshed." As is often the case Facilities main concern was coming in under budget. New towel dispensers were installed which were cheap and easily broken. In the men's restroom on Pius Level 1 no less than 10 dispensers were installed over the course of several months. Eventually, a new model was purchased and installed.
Availability of Fresh and Vegetarian Dining Options, (7/8/2014)
I feel that decisions are often made by Facilities and other departments within the university with only the short term in mind. Coming in under budget is the primary goal and there is little oversight with respect to these decisions. I would like to see departments take the long-term view and in the very specific case of the restrooms I would have liked to have seen Dyson Air Blades installed. This would have eliminated paper towels altogether which are a perennial problem since they repeatedly stop up toilets, create unnecessary waste and expense, and are often out of stock in the restrooms. Dyson Air Blades are more hygienic, eliminate waste, and, in the long term, save money. In addition, they would have made SLU a shining example of an ecologically conscious green campus.
The greater lesson here though is that decisions made with long term considerations are always superior to those made with short term considerations, especially when the primary goal is to "come in under budget" solely to impress the administration with little thought given to quality, durability, the environment, and the SLU community.
RESPONSE: Thanks for providing us with feedback regarding Pius Library’s towel dispensers. Upon receiving your comments on this, we checked with the custodial supervisors that are responsible for overseeing these activities and did not find a similar pattern of having broken towel dispensers in our other buildings. Our decisions are based on having consistent and functional dispensers for all of our 100+ buildings and include reviews regarding quality, durability, the environment and the SLU community. While funding and priorities are a main concern for everyone at SLU, we will continue our review and analysis of all the available products in this line to determine future feasibility. (9/8/2014)

Parking During Fair St. Louis, (7/2/2014)
1) Question: is it true that the grab-and-go refrigerated food options in Ameren Cafe are prepared in Chicago and delivered to campus on Monday for the whole week? This is what a food service manager told us a few weeks ago, and I am deeply concerned about the safety and freshness of such food. I believe that full transparency is in order in a case like this one, and if that's true, I feel a large, visible sign should be posted above the refrigerated grab-and-go case. People are risking their health on unfresh foods, and that feels completely inappropriate to me.
2) Suggestion: we need MANY MORE vegetarian options at campus dining locations -- not just for a "limited time only," but all the time. Many members of our community face challenges with food on this campus, on a good day, and the loss of Terra Ve is strongly felt. Vegetarian options should be available in fresh food, as well as grab-and-go.

SUBMISSION: Is it possible for SLU to communicate to us the University's role in assisting Fair St. Louis with parking this weekend. Med Center Parking and Card Services Closure, (7/1/2014)
RESPONSE: SLU is not assisting with parking for the Fair St. Louis. Fair St. Louis has hired St. Louis Parking to work the event, but has been instructed that individuals with SLU hang tags should not be charged. (7/2/2014)

Communication of University Benefits, (6/30/2014)
RESPONSE: Parking and Card Services is currently reviewing various options for the Medical Center to receive items such as coupons and monthly metro passes. We will continue to look at ways of improving the flow between campuses as we move forward. (7/1/2014)

University Vision Insurance, (6/23/2014)
RESPONSE: The Benefits Office constantly works to improve their communications around important benefit issues. During the 2014 Open Enrollment period we plan to send targeted emails reminding employees to re-enroll for their Health Savings, Flexible Spending and/or Dependent Care Plans, as well as communications around qualifying for the Vitality program. Employment Following VERP, (6/20/2014)

RESPONSE: The Benefits Office did plan on rolling out voluntary benefits, including vision insurance, in the Spring of 2014 for a July 1st effective date. This was before we were informed of the Voluntary Enhanced Retirement Program which has been a significant time commitment from the Benefits Office. Accordingly, we will be rolling out these benefits in the Fall of 2014 for a January 1, 2015 effective date. (7/1/2014)
SUBMISSION: From what I understood VERP was designed to usher out more established positions for new blood, so to speak. The ultimate goal being to create a better financial position for the new president. Sounds wonderful if everything runs smoothly and all departments have enough key members to continue.
University Emergency Notifications, (4/3/2014)
Staff were told they would be unable to work part time if they took the VERP at the SAC meeting. On the other end of this is that faculty will be taking it (VERP) only to be allowed to come back as adjunct. I am curious of the logic to this as some faculty will now be paid, essentially, time and a half.
At a fundamental level: Tenure=full time/salary; Adjunct=part time/contract workers. I know there are more differences, politics and probably regulations but something such as this seems as if it would cause another divide between Faculty and Staff. It is being recognized at a university level that there is a difference. It also seems to go against the ultimate goal of VERP- a major loop hole that would not benefit SLU's budget. (6/20/2014)
RESPONSE: Thank you for your comment and your interest in SLU’s Voluntary Enhanced Retirement Program. As you noted, the program was designed to realize savings for the University. Thus, no individual who took the VERP is eligible to be hired back into a permanent position with benefits. Any employee — faculty or staff — who participated may be considered for temporary employment if approved through the appropriate channels. This would be on a case-by-case basis to help SLU meet its business goals and needs. (6/30/2014)
SUBMISSION: I live in South City right next to a fire station and the tornado sirens still did not wake me up during the storm in the 5:00 hour this morning. I did get the phone call from SLU, and that is what woke us up. I just wanted to say that that phone call and text were VERY helpful. We work collaboratively with University stakeholders and the National Weather Service to relay information as soon as possible. Then they get to decide to delegate to the departments that the departments are going to do all the follow-up work for what B & F wants/needs or we don't get our PO's/paperwork processed. SUBMISSION: I am a University Employee of 13 years and had previously worked for the Hospital 13 years as well. What I would like to bring to your attention has to do with vacation, sick and holiday hours accrued. I was extremely upset when it was announced a few years ago that employees who resign would only be paid out 40 hours of vacation. My vacation time always hovers at the 200 max allow amount and as much as I would love to take off and keep my hours below the threshold my job duties and responsibilities don't allow me that opportunity. Plus I felt there should be an exception to this rule when an employee, such as myself, has over 800 hrs of accrued sick time that they are leaving behind. Which brings me to my suggestion, when Tenet took over the Hospital they converted our vacation, sick and holiday hours into something they referred to as Banked Time. Banked time was vac/sick/holiday hours accrued monthly and converted into dollars that were banked, whenever we took time off we paid ourselves from this banked money. It's been awhile so I may not be using the right terms but the idea behind the banked time was to pay out the employee their vac/sick/holiday benefit using whatever salary, hourly rate at that time the hours were accrued with the idea of reducing their payout liability down the road because they had already paid out this benefit. For example say out of my 200 hrs of vacation a 100 hrs is still unused time from when I was making $10 an hour and now when I use it the University pays me my time off at my current rate of pay of $20 an hour, if the University had been using Banked Time the University would have paid or banked the 100 hrs at the $10 an hour rate. I hope your able to grasp what it is I am trying to convey and I do feel the University would benefit in the long run converting over to this new way of banking vacation, sick and holiday time.(3/3/2014)

Garage Access During Inclement Weather, (3/3/2014)
RESPONSE: The announcement of the change in the amount for subsidized parking and medical benefits from $25,000 to $33,000 was made in an email from the interim Vice President on November 15, 2013. In that communication it states that the discount is for a $100 annual discount for general parking and that the change will occur automatically for qualified employees, and no action is required on the part of the employee. This is all done through payroll and is not a function of Parking and Card Services. If you currently have general parking, make less than $33,000 and are not receiving the discount, you should contact payroll. (3/17/2014)
SUBMISSION: During inclement (particularly icy/snowy) weather, could the entrance "ramps" to the Laclede garage be plowed/salted more thoroughly? Alternatively, perhaps the entrance gates could be let up during peak employee arrival time in the morning. It is difficult and somewhat dangerous to make that small incline from a dead stop in such a narrow passageway. (3/3/2014)

RESPONSE: We do raise the gates to the garages during inclement weather if necessary but since Facilities does the clearing on campus during those times I will forward this to them as well so they can address your concerns with how they are being cleared. Our garages operate on a fee system for public parking requiring a ticket in order to pay upon exit so we do not raise the gates for entry unless it is absolutely necessary. We also have an entrance for permit holders only on the lower level of Laclede that you may want to try using during peak business hours. With regard to plow/salting the garage ramps... Jeff Macko confirmed that we do plow and salt the entrance ramps to all the garages, however we can certainly check the entrances more frequently during a snow event. (3/17/2014)
Change of Font in Banner Self Service, (2/14/2014)
It would very helpful if staff could use the track in the fitness center, free of charge, to walk during the day when we experience cold weather. Even if there were just a few designated hours, perhaps around lunch, that would be a great help to our wellness. (3/3/2014)RESPONSE:
Thank you for your submission. While Simon Recreation Center isn’t able to offer complimentary access to its facilities on a daily basis, we do try to support non-members participating in other SLU programs. For example, Human Resources’ twice-monthly Vitality 5K Walk/Run
events move to the Rec Center during inclement weather. Also, participants in the summer Walk to Madrid Program
can use the center’s indoor track when it’s raining or there is excessive heat. Membership fees are available at a greatly reduced rate through the Vitality Partner Health Club Program
SUBMISSION 1:My co-workers and I are having troubles with the new Arial font in Banner. It is blurry and the letters are too close together which makes reading difficult. My screen's resolution is set to 1280x800, but it is still hard to read the screens and editing online is just worse. I have 20/20 vision and I am having trouble; I can only imagine how my older co-workers are working with this. I don't think it is safe for our eyesight to strain our eyes all day just to complete daily tasks. I am aware of the issue with the Madrid campus' need for a font that would accommodate the characters they use, but I hope that there is another font which is more convenient for us all. I would suggest Calibri or Times New Roman. (2/14/2014)

SUBMISSION 2: The "font" change to INB was disturbing in the way it was handled. Was there any input from end users? The new font is VERY difficult to see/read/enter/proof (especially since there is no spell check capability). Even when increasing the screen resolution - it is still difficult to use, almost "fuzzy." For those of us who regularly use Banner in "text" format, this unannounced drastic change has increased the difficulty of our daily tasks and slowed our production. (2/14/2014)

SUBMISSION: Is it all possible to change the sensors at the parking garage? You have to have your card very close to the sensor to get the gate to open, which makes it very hard to leave. Employee Parking Garage Fees, (2/7/2014)
RESPONSE: The Billiken Brick Program is not something the University has marketed in recent months. We do, however, have the ability to take orders for additional pavers. In light of the success of our men’s basketball team, and several of our other athletic programs, your suggestion to promote the brick program is a great idea. We will look into re-launching the online order form and identify opportunities to market the Billiken Brick Program through various online avenues. Thanks for your suggestion. (2/18/14)
SUBMISSION: Can the current policy for charging faculty and staff for parking be revisited? For general parking, we are charged at least $50 a month which means $600 a year. That is a big chunk of salary taken out and seems excessive for charging employees this much money a month to park where they work.
Communication of Delayed Closure, (2/5/2014)
This is particularly frustrating when we have to drive around to four different lots in the morning to find a parking spot. I'm not sure why I pay for parking and then have to walk halfway across campus?
There should also be complimentary parking in the Laclede garage for those going in to workout at the Simon Rec Center. Paying $50 a month for parking and then paying meters (and potentially getting parking tickets) is not a great way I'd like to spend my salary when I'm making an effort to be healthy and work out.
It would be a huge boost for employee morale if there was a way to provide free parking options for faculty and staff. Continue to charge the students, but not employees. (2/7/2014)
RESPONSE: Working in an urban environment has parking restrictions because of the high cost and demand for property. Most places of employment in those urban areas do not provide complimentary parking for their employees. Because there is a cost associated with having land and the up keep of the lots and garages, this isn't something that the University can provide at a free or lower rate. We know this is an additional cost to employees and make every effort to offer various options of parking from General to Reserved so each person can evaluate their personal situation and select what works for them. We have also not had a parking increase to rates on campus since September 2011. We do also offer discounted parking and benefits for employees that have a salary of $33,000 or lower and also for part time employees.
We offer parking for Frost permit holders to assist those who work out at Simon Rec Center. During the morning hours they can park in the Laclede garage until 8:30 AM and again in the evening starting at 4:00 PM and all day on Weekends. Med Campus permit holders have Laclede as a reciprocal garage so they can use it for the Rec Center as well. (2/21/14)
SUBMISSION 1: On February 5, 2014, I received notification at 6:23 that the university would open late, at 10am. I called the snowline multiple times this morning, including 6:00am, 6:10am, and 6:15am. The university announced regular business hours all of these times.
Access to Hermann Stadium Locker Rooms, (1/29/2014)
I work as a graduate assistant and start my work day at 7:30 am. In addition, I live over 45 minutes, on a perfectly clear day day, from campus. As such, telling me at 6:23 am that the university would open late is an useless. In fact I am writing this from a university computer, since I was already on my way to work at the time of notification and have since arrived on campus, along with many other annoyed looking staff members who received notification too late.
Contacting the university community at 6:23 is an insult. This decision should have been made and announced by 5am at the latest. This would have given all faculty, students, and staff notice before they left their homes. However, instead the university delayed the decision and stranded the various university community members who were already on their way to campus. Not all university personnel live within a ten minute drive. Some of us live much further away and deserve the COMMON COURTESY of being notified of a late start within a reasonable response time. An hour and a half before the regular university day starts is not enough. On a snowy day, it takes most people at least that long to get to campus.
If SLU truly wants to improve communication and respond to the concerns of the community, snow notifications should be a priority. Make the decision early (5am at the latest) and alert all university community members by that time. (2/5/2014)

SUBMISSION 2: I would like to take this moment to thank DSPEP for the kind reminder that the university would be closed at 6:40 this morning for a grand total of 3 additional hours. Never mind the fact that I had already been up and ready to leave for work by this time, and only by chance did I check my email and see that the university would not open until 10AM. I don't know who at Saint Louis University is in charge of determining university-wide closures, but I would personally like to extend my congratulations to this individual's lack of consideration for the fact that some employees have to commute through icy interstates and slick bridges to get to their jobs. In the future, rather than making important decisions 5 minutes before some people leave for work, I would truly appreciate it if the university would actually take action at a time that is thoughtful of others. SUBMISSION 3: Two things regarding snow announcements:
Announcing snow schedule at 6:20am is a bit late. We already have programs and operations going by then. We had to make plans and communicate them last night so that people can plan their sleep / wake / morning plans.
I believe the university has my cell phone to let me know if there is an active shooter or other big situations (tornado?), in addition to receiving a text about a shooter, I'd be fine with getting a text about snow announcements. I think many people would be fine with it. The technology is all in place, it is just a matter of changing the criteria of what events get texted out. The voice mail message on my work phone telling me that we're on a snow schedule wasn't really helpful to me.
But I was glad that yesterday the word got out before 3pm that we would close at 3pm. There was at least once when that word got out about 3:20pm. (2/5/2014)

SUBMISSION: Can faculty & staff use the locker room facilities in Hermann Stadium? I would like to run either at the track or around Frost Campus. According to a manager at Simon Recreation Center, the only way I can shower there is to buy a membership for an entire year. The Medical Campus has free showers in Doisy Research Center building, but it is inconvenient to go to the Medical campus just to shower.
Recycling of Old Office Supplies, (1/28/2014)
I suggest putting a SLU ID card reader on the doors of the men's & women's locker rooms at Hermann Stadium so faculty and staff who want to walk or run on Frost campus can shower without either paying a membership to Simon Recreation Center or going to the Medical campus. (1/29/2014)
RESPONSE: Thanks for your submission. The locker rooms at Hermann Stadium are not available for general use. During the academic year, they are used exclusively by SLU’s student-athletes, and during the summer, Campus Recreation has young campers (ages 6 - 12) using the facilities. There are available showers at Salus Center — not far from the Medical Center Stadium track — that do not require a membership at Simon Recreation Center. It should be noted that Simon Rec does offer the Vitality Partner Health Club program, which makes membership fees more affordable. Daily and monthly passes are available as well. SUBMISSION: I think many offices have old binders or other supplies they have no use for that are taking up space. We should create an online system to add supplies you would like to get rid of and a column for the amt. you want to get rid of and who the contact person is. SLU Intercollegiate Football, (1/28/2014)
RESPONSE: That is a great idea! We encourage everyone at SLU to be a Green Billiken and start their own office sustainability program. This could be an excellent activity to start as part of Recyclemania. We are currently collecting submissions for offices to participate in their own activities. SUBMISSION: I'm curious to know if SLU has plans to bring back intercollegiate football. It would complete the whole collegiate experience that is lacking on campus.
Short-Term Disability Insurance, (1/24/2014)
It would bring back alumni, is a powerful marketing and recruiting tool (exposure), it would draw students of diverse backgrounds and interests — not just players, but music majors (marching band), dance/theater majors (cheer/dance teams), student trainers and managers (students interested in all majors, most notably healthcare professions), allow the opportunity for local HS graduates to continue playing football at the collegiate level, generate business on campus (concessions, ticket sales, boosters, merchandising) as well as the city of St. Louis. It also contributes to the Jesuit mission of educating "the whole person" — mind, body, heart and spirit. (1/28/2014)

Feedback Regarding Tool, (1/23/2014)
I am curious as to why the health insurance plan at SLU has no short term disability policy option. This is a Catholic institution that does not provide any paid maternity leave for employees. It would be wonderful if we had the option to purchase a short term disability policy through the insurance plan. I spent a lot of time seeking out insurance companies to offer me an individual short term disability policy, but could not find one. All said they only offer that policy in connection with a group plan. I would love a response! (1/24/2014) RESPONSE:
Saint Louis University does not offer short-term disability because we offer a generous sick policy. Full-time regular staff members accrue sick days at the rate of 13 days per year, up to a maximum of 130 days (1,040 hours). Employees also enjoy a generous vacation policy, starting at 10 days per year and working up to 22 days. The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) provides eligible employees with up to 12 weeks of job protected leave in the event of a qualifying reason, such as maternity leave. This federal law does not guarantee paid time off; however, if employees have accrued sick and vacation time, they may use it to replace salary while on FMLA leave.(1/31/14) For more information on these policies, please refer to the staff handbook

SUBMISSION: It would be good to have a quarterly update on any SLU, SLUCare, ITS, HR, approved policy changes. If there could also be a brief list of what changed inside the policy that would help. We need to know when we need to review the updates. The policy and handbook documents should also be setup to print the approved date as a header or footer on each page printed/displayed so that all are aware if they are looking at the latest information. SUBMISSION: Would have been appropriate to have a 10 AM start date today (Jan 21) with the cold temperatures and poor conditions of the roads. Would have allowed road crews more time to treat streets/highways and keep SLU employees out of rush hour. A 30 minute commute normally took me 90+ minutes today. (1/21/2014)

University Closure for Inclement Weather/Flexible Class Scheduling, (1/21/14)
I started working for SLU in the Wool Center about 3 months ago and have a couple of suggestions, one to improve safety for students, faculty, and staff and the other to improve happiness.
- Lobby the city to put in a cross walk across Lindell in front of the BioMedical Eng building or the Wool Center. Every day I see staff and students trying to cross this street and avoid cars that are going 40-50 MPH. This is not safe and I have seen cars come close to hitting pedestrians.
- Clear walking paths through the snow in front of the Wool building on both sides of Lindell. We regularly have to step up to our knees in snow to get from the sidewalk down to the street and from the street up on to the sidewalk. As you can imagine, wet shoes and socks are not the most pleasant ways to start and end the day working at Saint Louis U. (1/21/14)
Thank you for your suggestion of installing a pedestrian crosswalk on Lindell, east of Grand. SLU did have discussions with the City about adding a signalized crosswalk at Hotel Ignacio across Lindell. The cost, close to $200,000, was never funded. Since then, Grand Center has proposed a signal at the former Theresa Ave., and wants to reopen that street to Lindell. Grand Center's project costs substantially more and again, there is no funding for their plan at this time. Because of the danger in crossing busy urban streets where there is no crosswalk, or even against pedestrian walk lights, the University encourages pedestrians to cross at designated crosswalks, in compliance with the traffic lights and to always be alert to traffic in the roadway. Also, your request for snow removal at Wool Center has been received and we will include it in our after action review for discussion and options.
The winter storm we experienced on Sunday, January 5, coupled with the extremely cold temperatures and wind chill factors continuing on Monday, January 6, created difficult and dangerous scenarios for the university employees who reported to work as emergency essential personnel to clear and maintain drifting and snow covered paths, drives and lots. In addition, through much of Tuesday and Wednesday, these crews continued efforts around both the Frost and Med Center campus, hand shoveling numerous areas on campus and working continuously to meet the huge demands of a campus of our size.
Please know that we have everyone’s best interest taken into consideration. We can always improve and continually strive to perform better. (1/27/14)
SUBMISSION: SLU was not closed today, January 21st, despite extremely cold weather that made driving treacherous. At my 9:30 class, five of the seventeen members of the class were unable to make it, one of whom had an accident, and I was ten minutes late, driving on Highway 40 for an hour and a half, on what is normally a 25 minute drive.
I do not understand why a university, with so many intelligent minds, insists on holding classes on obviously hazardous days, when MODOT encourages all sane people to stay home. Why risk the health, damage to vehicles, and even injury to students and staff just because of an inflexible academic schedule? Unlike, secondary schools, I recognize that colleges are bound by tightly scheduled graduation ceremonies.
However, I would rather have the flexibility of a Registrar's Office that can arrange for make-up classes on Saturdays for days when the weather entails real risks in damages and injuries like today! (1/21/2014)
