The department of Nutrition and Dietetics hosted two very successful events in October, the first Gardens to Tables Fundraiser and the third Gardens to Tables Food Day
The first annual Gardens to Tables Fundraiser, sponsored by Anthem BlueCross BlueShield and Sodexo, brought nearly 60 guests and more than $8,500 in proceeds on October 11. Organized by Aaron McMullin and Kristen Stewart, the event featured a food and wine/beer pairing with dishes of fresh, local ingredients prepared by the Department's chef-instructors. The proceeds from the evening will go towards the annual expenses of the garden, which include seeds and seedlings, organic fertilizer, compost, organic soap sprays, chicken feed, tools and soil.
The third annual Gardens to Tables Food Day took place on October 24 and brought more than 200 people to the SLU Garden. The event, organized by Lauren Landfried, promotes sustainable, healthy and just agricultural practices as well as promoted a healthier St. Louis Community. The event kicked off with keynote speaker Jacki Dirksmeyer, of FEED MY PEEPS ministry at Rock Church Soulard who discussed her role on improving the St. Louis area food system. The event was made possible through a partnership between the Department, the City of St. Louis Department of Health and Les Dames d'Escoffier International.
The garden serves as a positive learning environment for SLU students and St. Louis community members interested in understanding the principles and practices of organic gardening. Over the last 10 years, the garden has been a focal point for a number of programs and initiatives involving several departments including Nutrition and Dietetics, Engineering, Biology, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Public Health.
