All are invited to join the St. Louis community of the United States Central and Southern Province of the Society of Jesus to celebrate the Mass of the Holy Spirit at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at Chaifetz Arena.
Ronald Mercier, S.J., newly-appointed Provincial of the now-combined Missouri and New Orleans Provinces, will deliver the homily as the University marks the inauguration of the 2014-2015 academic year. Classes will be canceled from 11 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. for the liturgical celebration.
This year, more than just the Saint Louis University community will celebrate. Not only will this Mass mark the inauguration of the academic year, it will also celebrate the 800th anniversary of the birth of St. Louis, Saint and King; the 250th anniversary of the city of St. Louis; the 200th anniversary of the restoration of the Society of Jesus; and the 150th anniversary of Jesuits of the Missouri Province.
To mark these significant events, students and faculty from St. Louis University High School, Loyola Academy and De Smet Jesuit High School — all part of the planning process with SLU — will join the Mass. Other Jesuit apostolic works, including the Alum Service Corps, Jesuit Volunteer Corps and Ignatian Volunteer Corps, will also be invited to join the University as one community in the Spirit to celebrate each institution's unique gifts and then sent to serve their respective communities.
All are invited and encouraged to be part of this celebration.
