January 20, 2017 - Congratulations to Ismaila and Mike! Their paper studying the electrochemistry of PQQ in biological buffers has been accepted into the Journal of the Electrochemical Society as part of a focus issue on biological fuel cells! It is now available online here


January 17, 2017 - The spring semester starts! Welcome to new undergraduate researcher Christopher David and welcome back to Jack Samuelian, who joins us as a grad student! Dr. Baum has also moved to a new office next door to the lab.


November 11, 2016 - Dr. Baum presented the SLU chapter of Sigma Xi and presented a poster on our research at the National Meeting in Atlanta, GA!


October 27, 2016 - Marc represented the group and gave an oral presentation at the Midwest Regional ACS Meeting in Manhattan, KS!

December 20, 2015 - Fun in Hawaii for Pacifichem 2015! Dr. Baum and Erienne each presented talks, including a last-minute, fill-in talk by Erienne, in Electrochemistry and Nucleic Acid sessions. Erienne also presented a poster. Great time and great interactions with colleagues from all over the world!

October 26, 2015 - Congratulations to Ismaila and Paige! Their paper studying the activity of redox cofactors when bound to DNA aptamers has been accepted into the Journal of Molecular Evolution as part of a special edition celebrating the 25th anniversary of SELEX! It is now available online here

December 9, 2014 - Another semester comes to a close! Welcome to three new undergraduates who will start doing research with us in the spring: Mark Cheneler, Jack Samuelian, and Prerak Trivedi!


October 16, 2014 - Road Trip! Ismaila, Erienne, Paige, Mike, and Dr. Baum headed to Nashville to attend SERMACS 2014. Ismaila gave a great talk and posters by Erienne, Paige, and Mike also received several visitors. Dr. Baum talked with several students at the graduate school fair about our program. October 6, 2014 - Ismaila attended the STARS banquet to see Praveen receive an LMI/D3 Award for Excellence in Research for his STARS paper!


September 2, 2014 - Dr. Baum presented a seminar to the Bioengineering Department at the University of Misssouri - Columbia. Special thanks to Dr. Heather Hunt for the invitation and Dr. Donald Burke and his group for the wonderful discussion!

May 20, 2014 - Dr. Baum found out at the end of April that she has been granted tenure and promoted to Associate Professor, effective July 1, 2014! Special thanks to all current and former members of the Baum lab who helped make this possible. Your hard work is greatly appreciated!


May 17, 2014 - Another school year has ended. Congratulations to Katie, who completed her BS degree in Biochemistry. She will be attending graduate school at the University of Missouri - Columbia in the fall. Nick J. will be heading to Medical School at the University of Nebraska, while Nick S. will be making a short trip down the street to the MD/PhD program at SLU Med! One of our former lab members, Sujit Bhimireddy, earned his MD at SLU Med this spring. We wish all of our graduates the best of luck in their future endeavors!


May 13, 2014 - Ismaila traveled to Orlando, FL to present a talk at the ECS meeting.


May 5, 2014 - The Baum Lab was well represented at the SLU Sigma Xi Research Symposium. Ismaila, Erienne, Paige, and Katie all presented posters and Dr. Baum organized judging for the Physical Science posters.


April 28,2014 - Katie represented our lab in the Chemistry's Department's Marcus Award competition. She presented a poster on her work.


April 23,2014 - Katie presented a poster as part of SLU's Senior Legacy Symposium.


April 11, 2014 - Busy day for the Baum Lab! Ismaila presented a poster at SLU's Graduate Student Research Symposium, while Paige and Katie presented posters at the Undergraduate Research Symposium sponsored by the St. Louis Section of the ACS. Congratulations to Katie for being awarded first place for her poster!


March 19, 2014 - Katie and Dr. Baum attended the National ACS Meeting in Dallas. Katie's poster was chosen for SciMix, so she got to present her poster twice!

April 12, 2013 - Nick J. and Nick S. presented a poster at the Undergraduate Research Symposium sponsored by the St. Louis Section of the ACS. They did a fantastic job presenting their work.


April 7, 2013 - Dr. Baum attended the National ACS Meeting in New Orleans. She presented a poster on our work characterizing the effects of organic cosolvents on deoxyribozymes.


March 5, 2013 - Dr. Baum returned from a trip to India where she participated in the Indo-US Workshop on Electrocatalytic Materials for Fuel and Biofuel Cells. The workshop was held at Banara Hindu University in Varanasi, India. She presented a talk on our work to use DNA as components of biofuel cells. She and the other US participants also visited a few other sites in India. Special thanks to the organizers, Dr. Shelley Minteer and Dr. V. Ganesan for the invitation!


January 24, 2013 - Dr. Baum presented a seminar to the Chemistry Department at Creighton University and had a great day visiting with the faculty and students there. Special thanks to Dr. Julie Soukup for the invitation!


January 14, 2013 - Welcome undergraduate researchers Katie Foley and Neha Thakkar! Welcome back to Derek Sonnenberg after his time abroad in Madrid!


December 4, 2012 - Our paper looking at the effect of organic cosolvents on RNA-ligating deoxyribozymes was accepted to Biopolymers! Congratulations to Anit, Kelsey, Allen, Kennedy, Mengyu, and Rebecca! This paper was a real team effort! You can access the paper on the Biopolymers website.


October 26, 2012 - Dr. Baum attended the 47th Midwest Regional ACS Meeting in Omaha, NE. She presented a talk in a symposium entitled "Biophysics of Proteins and Nucleic Acids."


September 29, 2012 - Dr. Baum attended the Midwestern Universities Analytical Chemistry Conference (MUACC 2012) held at the University of Wisconsin - Madison and presented a talk.


September 20, 2012 - Dr. Baum returned to her alma mater, the Department of Chemistry at Washington University in St. Louis to present a seminar. She had nice visit and enjoyed seeing the changes since she was a student!


September 6, 2012 - Dr. Baum visited the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Bradley University to present a seminar. She had nice visit and enjoyed meeting with students!


August 24, 2012 - Dr. Baum returned to the Department of Chemistry at the University of Kentucky to present a seminar. She had a great day visiting with her old professors and the new faculty. The Testa lab has seen some changes, but is doing some really exciting work!


August 21, 2012 - Ismaila, Allen, and Kelsey traveled to Philadelphia to present posters at the 244nd ACS meeting! Yes, there is a picture of Ismaila and Kelsey wearing beanies on the lab pictures page.


August 7, 2012 - Summer is quickly coming to an end. It has been very crazy with the various construction projects in the building, but we continue to move forward. We hosted another great STARS student in our lab this summer, Isa Mulvihill. We also welcomed undergraduate researcher, Nick Jesse, at the start of the summer. Undergraduate researcher Nick Steinauer joins us in the fall. We have an exciting fall ahead, so stay tuned!


May 21, 2012 - Well, it is official! Our NIH AREA proposal has been selected for funding! We thank the NIH for their support of our work on developing nucleic acid-based small molecule sensors.


May 18, 2012 - Congratulations to our graduates! Ismaila received his MS degree and Anit received his Honors BS degree in Biochemistry! Don't worry, they aren't going too far. Ismaila is continuing on towards his PhD and Anit will be attending SLU Med School. Good luck to both!


May 7, 2012 - Dr. Baum attended the 221st Electrochemical Society meeting in Seattle, WA and presented a talk on our work.


May 4, 2012 - Anit and Mengyu presented posters at the Undergraduate Research Symposium sponsored by the St. Louis Section of the ACS. They both did a wondeful job presenting their work.


April 30, 2012 - Congratulations to Anit for being selected as the 2012 Leopold Marcus Award winner! Anit was chosen for the award based on a poster presentation given to the Chemistry Department faculty on his research.


April 24, 2012 - Congratulations to Ismaila for successfully passing his Masters oral defense! Ismaila will be continue to work towards his Ph.D. in our lab!


March 14, 2012 - Dr. Baum presented a seminar to the Department of Chemistry at Missouri State University and had a great day visiting!

January 24, 2011 - Happy New Year! We are already off to a great start. First, welcome to undergraduate Anit Behera. Dr. Baum, Mi, and Kennedy will be attending the National ACS Meeting in Anaheim at the end of March to present talks. Finally, our lab's first paper was accepted for publication in Chemical Communications! Congratulations, Kennedy! The paper is currently available as an Advanced Article for anyone with institutional access here.


December 6, 2010 - It has been a busy fall in the Baum lab! We have submitted our first paper and our selections are progressing! Mi and Kennedy presented posters at the joint SWRM and SERMACS 2010 Regional Meeting of the ACS in New Orleans. Check out their pictures here.

March 26, 2010 - Join us for the Sigma-Aldrich Lecture Series
Dr. Ronald Breaker, Henry Ford II Professor of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at Yale University and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, will be presenting two lectures this April for the Sigma-Aldrich - Saint Louis University Seminar Series. The first lecture, "Metabolite-sensing Riboswitches: Molecular Relics from the RNA World?", will be presented at 4 pm, April 14, at Saint Louis University, Lee Lecture Hall.
The second talk, entitled "Discovery and Analysis of Extraordinary Noncoding RNAs", will start at 10 am on April 15 in the Sigma-Aldrich Life Sciences Auditorium, room 1610, 2909 Laclede Avenue All members of the Saint Louis scientific community are welcome at both events. December 23, 2008 - The majority of the work has been completed on the lab and we were able to begin moving in and setting up equipment.
