SLU Theatre and Dance

Saint Louis University's theatre program collaborates as a theatrical company, fostering commitment to the group while strengthening your abilities in performance, design, direction and management. The dance minor investigates the expressive potential of dance as its own art form, in other fields, or in personal practice.

Theatre and Dance Scholarships

Theatre and Dance students at SLU may apply for a Theatre and Dance Talent Scholarship. In addition to completing the theatre and dance scholarship application, interested students must audition, present a portfolio or interview for the award.

Scholarships are awarded on an annual basis, so you must reapply each year. You must also maintain the following requirements to keep your scholarship:

  • Major in theatre
  • Achieve a grade of "B" in all theatre coursework
  • Participate in all department productions

Students auditioning for the scholarship should prepare two contrasting monologues (comedic/dramatic). Monologues should be memorized and not exceed a total audition time of four minutes. You may sing during your audition, but no accompanist will be provided (CD player and iPod docks are available).

If you are unable to audition/interview on campus, you may submit a digital audition via Acceptd.

Submit your Digital Audition or Portfolio

If you  have auditioned or interviewed at a state or international thespian conference you need not re-audition or interview but still must complete the scholarship application.

Theatre and Dance and Performance Experience

Each year, the Theatre and Dance program produces a season of plays, with students forming the company of actors, designers and technicians responsible for all aspects of the production.

Mentored and advised by faculty, you will work together with other students to clearly and appropriately present your imaginative ideas to others and explore your creativity. Most importantly, you will develop a collective responsibility and commitment to your work.

About Theatre and Dance

Our faculty connections help many SLU students find auditions among the 30 professional theaters around St. Louis. By branching into these communities, our theatre students enhance their education by encountering new perspectives and new roles. Through internships and working with professional companies, you will also develop valuable experience to enhance your resume.

Alpha Psi Omega

SLU's chapter of the National Theatre Honor Society, Alpha Psi Omega, offers a way to get involved in theatre outside of the classroom. Members of Alpha Psi Omega are actively involved on campus through a variety of activities, including:

  • Attending professional productions
  • Producing student-written, directed and performed works
  • Engaging in service with the St. Louis community

To be initiated into Alpha Psi Omega, you must maintain a level of academic excellence and participate in multiple University Theatre productions. For more information about SLU's Alpha Psi Omega chapter, contact Lucy Cashion at lucy.cashion@slu.edu.
