What College Students Love About St. Louis

There's a lot to love about St. Louis, from amazing outdoor spaces to one-of-a-kind museums and world-class theater experiences. Saint Louis University's campus in Midtown St. Louis is the perfect home base for exploring all the city has to offer.

"St. Louis is an awesome city to be going to school in," says Molly, a SLU student from Ohio.

Jay, a health management major from Tennessee, agrees. "I think there's a lot of cool things to do within the city of St. Louis. Also, on the SLU campus, they make it very easy for you to have really cool experiences if you just put yourself out there."

Want to know which places in town are not to be missed? We asked SLU students to share their favorite St. Louis-area attractions.

City Museum

It's hard to describe this one-of-a-kind museum — part art gallery, part jungle gym— which is housed in a 600,000-square-foot former shoe factory. G. Byron, SLU class of  '17, calls it "an adult playground for kids and adults alike."

Gabby, a junior, says, "What makes the City Museum so different is you're not just walking around looking at pieces of art; it's very interactive."

Be sure not to miss the City Museum's 10-story slide, which Preet, a public health and social justice student, calls "the coolest thing in the world."

The Fabulous Fox Theatre

Located steps from SLU's campus, in the Grand Center Arts District, the Fabulous Fox Theatre hosts Broadway shows and  top entertainment acts in a beautifully restored historic theater.

"It is just this amazing experience as soon as you walk in. All of a sudden, you feel a part of it," says neuroscience student Clare.

"It's really fun for a night off campus with friends," says Molly.

St. Louis Sports

St. Louis has been called one of the best sports cities in America, and SLU students will tell you the city lives up to its reputation. In addition to cheering on SLU's own Billikens in 18 Division I sports, students love watching the St. Louis Cardinals — 11-time World Series champions — and St. Louis Blues, the city's successful NHL team.

"I'm actually a huge Cubs fan," says Kerri from Chicago, "but going to the Cardinals games is so fun. It doesn't matter what team you're a fan of because just being at Busch Stadium is an experience in itself."

Blues games are an experience, too. "My favorite thing to do off campus is go to Blues' games," Jay says. "I wasn't a big hockey fan before I came to SLU. It took all of one game before I said, 'I'll be here a lot more!'"

Central West End

Just minutes from the Saint Louis University campus is the Central West End, an area known for some of the best restaurants, shopping, galleries and entertainment in town.

"In my opinion, it has some of the best food around St. Louis," says Jay.

"Everywhere you turn around, there's something new," says accounting major Gary.

Forest Park

Forest Park, just  five minutes from campus, is one of the world's most beautiful urban parks. The 1,300-acre park is larger than New York's Central Park and was recently named as the No. 1 city park in America by readers of USA Today. Within Forest Park you'll find the Saint Louis Zoo, Saint Louis Art Museum, Saint Louis Science Center and Missouri History Museum — which all offer free admission. You'll also find the Muny outdoor theater, biking and walking trails, lakes for boating and countless events and festivals held year-round.

"I would describe Forest Park as magical," says Molly. You know what? We're pretty sure you'll agree.
