Saint Louis University’s AACSB-accredited accounting master’s program, offered by the Richard A. Chaifetz School of Business, will enhance your professional accounting abilities while helping you develop strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.

About the Program

SLU’s accounting master’s program, ranked No. 28 for 2019 by U.S. News & World Report, provides in-depth expertise in general accounting, taxation and auditing. The Chaifetz School, with its continuing mission to provide excellence in business education, has developed the graduate accounting program to offer superior ethical, technical and professional accounting skills.

Program Highlights

SLU’s central location within the St. Louis metropolitan area allows us to enhance our internship and recruitment effectiveness by creating strong relationships in public accounting, private industry, not-for-profit companies and governmental entities.

The Saint Louis University chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, a national scholastic and professional accounting fraternity, provides a vital link between students and the accounting profession. It presents numerous guest speakers from various disciplines and industries each semester and has been recognized nationally for its continued excellence.

Students also have the option for an international perspective on the accounting profession by participating in a two-week-long study abroad trip to Saint Louis University's Madrid campus in May.

As a graduate accounting student at SLU, you’ll have access to the Valerie A. Davisson Career Resources Center, conveniently located within the Chaifetz School. The center helps students create meaningful connections, access outstanding internship and employment opportunities, and provides other valuable career management services.

Curriculum and Program Details

While all students complete a core of required courses that will prepare them for a career in accounting and the CPA examination, SLU’s graduate accounting programs also offer distinct areas of emphasis that allow you to focus on a specific discipline of accounting. Students achieve an area of emphasis by completing at least three elective courses in one of the three areas offered: audit, taxation or financial reporting.

After graduating, you may take the CPA exam and pursue a career as an accountant. SLU accounting graduates have a long history of success on the CPA exam, regularly placing in the top 10 percent of test scores. In addition, the University recently had the highest Missouri pass rate for first-time CPA candidates with advanced degrees. The mean annual wage of accountants, according to the Bureau of Labor, is $75,280.

Scholarships and Financial Aid
In addition to financial aid available to graduate students, SLU’s Master of Accounting program offers two types of scholarships: merit-based and competitive. A limited number of merit-based scholarships are available to admitted full-time students, and all admitted students are considered. Students who are awarded a merit-based scholarship will typically receive $500 to $3,000 per semester for two semesters total. The competitive scholarships vary in amount and are awarded in the spring to students entering their first or second semester of the master’s program the following fall. Complete the application by April 1 to be considered for one of the externally sponsored competitive scholarships.

Applicant Criteria

Applicants are reviewed for past undergraduate work, internship experience, and GMAT or GRE scores. While there is no minimum GMAT score required, the average GMAT score is 590. Average GRE scores are 150-153 on each section, quantitative and verbal. Successful applicants demonstrate a 3.0 grade point average in past academic programs.

You’ll need the following items to apply:

Application Requirements

Application form
Two letters of recommendation
Official GMAT score sent from ETS or Pearson VUE
Personal goal statement of less than 500 words

Requirements for International Students

  • For non-native speakers of English, an official TOEFL or IELTS score report is also required and must be sent directly from ETS or the British Council (SLU’s school code is 6629 for ETS). TOEFL and IELTS scores should be no more than two years old. We require a TOEFL score of 88 and an IELTS broadband of at least a 6.5.
  • The Pearson Test of English scores can be accepted as well.
  • A GPA on a 4.0 scale is required and should be reflected on official transcripts or documentation. All international transcripts must be calculated by the World Education Services (WES) or the Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) and include a course-by-course evaluation, including GPA and course levels. The graduate business programs office prefers WES, but will accept ECE.

Application and Assistantship Deadlines

Applications for admission are considered on a rolling basis.

Applicants who want to be considered for assistantships for the fall semester should apply by March 31, and for the spring semester by Dec. 1.

Review Process

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis once all application materials are received. Application files are reviewed holistically (undergraduate work, internship experience, test scores and personal goal statement). The average time for admissions decisions is two weeks.
