Saint Louis University Chemistry Program Overview
At Saint Louis University, you can get either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. No matter which track you choose, you'll have ample opportunity to pursue research projects under the close mentorship of a full-time faculty member and to use specialized equipment and computers.
How to choose between the two majors? If you are in the pre-professional health studies program, pre-law or are interested in a double major, the chemistry B.A. might be for you. If you want to go on graduate studies in chemistry
or biochemistry, or want to work directly for a chemical company, choose the chemistry B.S.
What You'll Learn in SLU's Chemistry Program
Both the B.A. and B.S. chemistry degrees at SLU offer a solid foundation in general chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, calculus and engineering physics.
Depending on your track, you might also explore mathematical techniques in chemistry, chemistry literature and advanced classes in the topics above. You will also complete a senior residency in chemistry.
What Can You Do With a Chemistry Degree from SLU?
SLU graduates with a degree in chemistry are prepared to pursue careers in:
- Chemical research and development in industry or government laboratories
- Pharmaceutical research and drug development
- Environmental research
- Management and administration in the chemical industry
- Chemical and pharmaceutical sales
Other graduates go on to law school and specialize in patent law or environmental law. The public health sector also provides many career opportunities for chemists.
