University Core Pilot - Fall 2021

The new University Core will launch for all incoming freshmen in the fall of 2022, but a select group of incoming freshmen are invited to participate in the Core one year early.

A Unique Opportunity for Early Adopters

We are thrilled to welcome you to the Billiken family of scholars this fall! In addition, you have been selected to participate as an early adopter of the new University Core. Choosing to participate means you will have the
opportunity to enroll in an Ignite seminar—a small-group, first-semester course which will introduce you to what makes teaching and learning at SLU distinctive and transformative.

Spaces are limited, so be sure to complete the opt-in form by May 21, 2021. Students will be registered on a first-come, first-served basis. The sooner you submit the form, the more likely you are to be registered and become an early adopter of the new Core.

To opt-in, choose the form that corresponds to your college or program:

University Core Pilot FAQs

What is the University Core?

The Saint Louis University Core curriculum is a holistic, integrated liberal arts curriculum that guides all of our undergraduates—regardless of major, school, college or program—in learning how to be intellectually flexible, creative, critical thinkers in the Jesuit tradition.

Why have I been invited to participate?

Although all students coming to SLU in the fall of 2022 will be on our new Core, we’ve worked closely with all programs across campus to identify an ideal group of undergraduate students to invite to participate in the Core one year early.

What are the benefits of opting in to participate now?
Students who opt-in to the Core in the fall of 2021 will get the benefits of a streamlined curriculum that has been intentionally designed to ensure that all the pieces connect and that by the time you graduate, you will have the tools to explain to someone else why your degree from SLU prepares you uniquely for your next steps.
Will these classes count toward my major?
Yes. Every course you take as part of the fall 2021-spring 2022 pilot year of the Core will count toward your general education requirements and toward the total number of hours you have to take to earn a degree from SLU.
Are there additional fees to participate?
No. It costs nothing to participate in the Core pilot. Students who opt-in to the Core pilot get the benefit of customized, small classes geared toward their interests with off-campus experiences included that will introduce them to what it means to study in the vibrant settings of Midtown St. Louis and Madrid, Spain.
How do I opt-in?

To opt in to the new Core, all you need to do is follow the link to the form that corresponds to your program or college/school. That link was also recently emailed to you. Spaces are limited, so make sure you opt in by May 21.

Who can I contact with more questions?
If you have any questions or want to talk through your options, contact Ellen Crowell, Director of the University Core, at core@slu.edu.
