Overview: This six-course, interdisciplinary program invites students to draw upon classes in both English and communication to gain practical training in writing poetry, fiction, essays, journalism and screenplays. SLU's minor in creative and professional writing also offers business-oriented courses in corporate communication, professional writing and advertising.
Curriculum: SLU's minor in creative and professional writing is open to students from all majors. Students studying communication or English frequently complete this minor as a way of supplementing their studies in their major.
Faculty: The professors who teach SLU's creative and professional writing program courses come from many different backgrounds that students can draw from in order to tailor their individual learning experience to their goals.
Careers: Graduates who have minored in creative and professional writing have found careers in print journalism, copy editing, public relations, advertising and teaching.
Internships: Several internship possibilities are available to students minoring in creative and professional writing at SLU. Students in this minor program have the opportunity to complete an internship with the University News, Saint Louis University's weekly student newspaper.
Students may also cover stories for two local papers, The Central West End Word and the Kirkwood-Webster Times. Additional internships in advertising and public relations are available. Students must obtain appropriate approval from the associated editor or employer and/or the certificate director.
