Saint Louis University

A number of teaching and research assistantships are available to MA(R) students, funded by the Graduate School and also by faculty external grants. Information here pertains specifically to the Graduate School assistantships. Formal applications for assistantships are made by the Graduate Program Director upon successful admission to the Graduate Program by the Graduate School.

Applicants should have a minimum 3.0 GPA (or the equivalent) in undergraduate coursework to be considered for an assistantship and must be enrolled as full-time classified graduate students in the Graduate Program.

Stipends & Benefits

The current Graduate School stipend is $15,00 for a 9-month contract period (usually beginning on the 15th of August, although may be pro-rated for January starts). In addition to full health benefits, an assistantship entitles students to 18 hours of tuition scholarship per academic year (up to 9 hours each in the Fall and Spring). To hold assistantships students must remain in good standing and be enrolled in graduate coursework, maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0. Students must commit a minimum of 15-20 hours per week to the Department, divided between teaching and research responsibilities, depending on the type of assistantship (TA or RA).

Teaching and Research Assistantships

The Department currently offers two types of assistantship: teaching (TA) and research (RA). TA's are expected to assist faculty in assigned laboratory and/or lecture classes for up to 20 hours per week. RA's have no teaching duties, but are expected to carry out research for a minimum of 20 hours per week. All externally funded assistantships are RA's. Incoming graduate assistants are typically assigned as TA's, but may, at the discretion of their mentor and the Graduate Program Director, transfer to RA status later during their tenure.

Although there is no formal deadline for admission to the Graduate Program, applicants wishing to be considered for an assistantship (beginning 1 July when most stipends become available) should have their complete application package submitted by 1 March.

Tuition Scholarships

We currently offer tuition scholarships or waivers that cover all or part of a student's tuition.
