Financial Aid

The Department matriculates no more than five students each year. Students receive a stipend of $18,000, plus health insurance, for five years under the following terms:

1.Years 1-3: Students receive a scholarship to cover the full costs of tuition. They are also paid a stipend of $18,000 for nine months, along with health insurance. During the first two years, each student will be assigned to a faculty member as a Graduate Research Assistant (RA). An RA assists the faculty member in his/her research, and may from time to time help with teaching. The goal of the RA program is to provide opportunities for the student to develop strong research skills, and to contribute to an original research project. During the third year, students will serve as Teaching Assistants (TA) for large lecture courses. As TA's for these courses, they will lead weekly small group discussion sections. They will be mentored by the instructor of the course.

2.Years 4-5: Students who have completed their examinations and dissertation prospectus will begin teaching their own Theological Foundations course in year four. Provided their teaching at the 100-level is well-evaluated, they will teach on the 200-level during their fifth year. In years four and five, students will be paired with a teaching mentor.

Students are also encouraged to enroll in the Certificate in University Teaching Skills sponsored by the Reinert Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning.

Beyond the fifth year, there is no additional financial aid provided, and teaching opportunities cannot be guaranteed.

Funding is guaranteed for five years provided that:

  • The student maintains the minimum GPA of 3.5
  • completes all program requirements in a timely manner, including all assessment for every course.
  • remains on track in their acquisition of languages related to their dissertation topic.
  • teaches at a satisfactory level.

Each student is evaluated at the end of each year and recommended by the Graduate Studies Committee for continued financial aid.
