Saint Louis University Retirement and 403(b) Plans

Saint Louis University employees can elect to contribute to a retirement or 403(b) plan. 

About SLU's 403 (b)Retirement Plan

The University retirement plan is a voluntary defined contribution plan. After one year of continuous service (at least 1,000 hours), the University will contribute to the retirement plan for eligible employees only if the employee is participating in the 403(b) plan. Due to the financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the University is suspending these employer matching contributions effective with payrolls beginning on or after July 1, 2020, and until further notice. Eligible employees will still become eligible for the matching contributions during the suspension period upon completion of the 1,000 hours requirement but will receive no matching contributions until the match contributions are reinstated.

Eligible employees are any person classified as an employee by the University, other than housestaff, adjunct faculty members, an individual whose employment is incidental to his/her education, or a member of a collective bargaining unit (unless the collective bargaining agreement provides for coverage under the retirement plan).

Contributions to the 403(b) plan are all tax deferred, and contributions made by the University are 100 percent vested immediately. For payroll periods beginning prior to July 1, 2020, the University’s contribution was based on the employee’s 403(b) contribution as follows:

403(b) Plan Details

Tax deferred investments are available through salary reduction from TIAA. All employees are immediately eligible. Employees may enroll for the 403b online through TIAA. Additionally, new participants and employees already contributing to the 403(b) can create and modify your contribution percentage online through TIAA.

How to Enroll Online

The IRS maximum contribution for 2019 is $19,000.  Employees age 50 or over in 2019 may contribute an additional $6,000.  Current employees who wish to take advantage of the additional contribution may do so online through TIAA.

To calculate what the maximum percentage of salary that you can contribute, divide your targeted contribution by your annual salary. For example, an employee with an annual salary of $76,000 will be eligible to contribute 25% of his/her salary, calculated as follows, $19,000/76,000= .25 or 25%.

All contributions to the 403(b) are made pre-tax. The vendor calculator provides access to tools available on the vendor websites. This will allow you to preview the tax savings you will experience by contributing to the 403(b).

Contribution Change Deadlines

Contribution changes are made directly on the TIAA website and these are received by Saint Louis University on a set schedule per pay period. The timing depends on if you are paid biweekly or monthly. Refer to the table below if you want to make changes to your existing 403(b) contribution elections.
