Minor in Ibero-American Studies

Offered by the Saint Louis University College of Arts and Sciences

  • Minor in Ibero-American Studies

Overview: The Ibero-American studies minor program, offered at Saint Louis University's campus in Madrid, Spain, is designed for students who want to enhance their undergraduate degree with a multidisciplinary education about the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world.

The program goes beyond academic study and places cultural and political issues in a contemporary context. Courses are drawn from the fields of history, political science, anthropology, archaeology, economics, philosophy and theology, as well as Spanish literature and Portuguese. You will explore the complex dynamics of Ibero-American societies, from the prehistoric era to the present. By living and studying in Madrid and taking part in academic trips to Latin America and different regions of the Iberian Peninsula, you will not only study the Ibero-American experience, you will live it.

The minor requires two semesters (or one semester and one-to-two summer sessions) at SLU's campus in Madrid, Spain, the social, political and economic capital of Iberia.

The program culminates in a once-in-a-lifetime experiential learning trip to South America, where you will interact with local cultures, participate in university seminars, tour historical sights and volunteer in the community.

Curriculum: SLU's minor in Ibero-American Studies requires a total of six courses in fields such as history, political science, economics, sociology, Spanish and Latin American literature, and Portuguese. Courses may be tailored based on your interests and career aspirations. Because the certificate is interdisciplinary, you may simultaneously pursue it and your major. (This minor also satisfies the "remaining hours" requirement of completing a minor or certificate.)

Faculty: Because SLU's Ibero-American studies faculty hold appointments in a variety of fields, students have a unique opportunity to learn from mentors from a wide-range of academic backgrounds.

Internships: SLU's Madrid campus has a variety of service-learning and internship opportunities available with both local and international organizations in the area. Local staff can help you identify the best opportunities, given your availability, interests and future plans.

Careers: Expertise in Ibero-America prepares you for a career in a variety of fields, including with government agencies, international development and nonprofit organizations and multinational corporations. Additionally, you will be equipped with valuable interpersonal skills for working with the significant percentage of the population in the U.S. whose cultural roots are in Spanish-speaking countries.
