Sutherell to Join Dean's Staff
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Jamie Sutherell as the newest member of my staff.
As associate dean for student affairs, Dr. Sutherell will work closely with Dr. Greg
Smith and Dr. Michael Railey on all issues related to student affairs at the medical
Many of you know Dr. Sutherell as the director of medical student education in pediatrics
and as a board-certified pediatric cardiologist. He has done an outstanding job leading
the pediatric clerkship, establishing himself as a top-notch educator at SLU and establishing
a national reputation in medical education. Dr. Sutherell has won numerous teaching
awards, including the Top Teacher Award for Outstanding Teaching in Pediatric Subspecialty
and the American Medical Student Association Golden Apple Award for Clinical Education
on multiple occasions. He has also been awarded the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine
Award and the Distinguished Teacher Award in Presentation Skills. Dr. Sutherell currently
serves on the Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics (COMSEP) as co-chair
of the National Core Pediatric Curriculum Revision Group.
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Sutherell graduated magna cum laude from Malone College
in Canton, Ohio, where he ran track and played the trumpet (on scholarship) before
earning his medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio.
Dr. Sutherell first came to St. Louis in 2002 for a pediatric residency at Washington
University and served as chief resident before returning to Ohio for a pediatric cardiology
fellowship at the University of Cincinnati. He joined SLU School of Medicine’s faculty
in 2009, where he earned a master’s degree in education, revamped the pediatric cardiology
fellowship, and maintained outstanding student programs in pediatrics.
With Dr. Sutherell’s transition to associate dean of student affairs, Dr. Jim Willmore
will step away from his role of 19 years in student affairs, but I’m pleased to say,
will continue as part of my staff.
Dr. Willmore has been a driving force in the success of our students. As associate
dean of student affairs, his service to the medical school and medical students has
been truly remarkable. He has impacted more than 3000 SLU medical students, guiding
them through the trials and tribulations of medical school with humor and grace.
During his tenure in student affairs, he answered thousands of panicked calls after
hours and provided counsel to students during the most difficult times. Every year,
he prepared medical students for Step #1, Step #2, the clinical years, residency applications,
internship and life beyond medicine.
Dr. Willmore will remain as associate dean of admissions for our medical school and
with the help of Dr. Smith and Dr. Railey, will aid Dr. Sutherell in making a seamless
transition as associate dean of student affairs.
I congratulate Dr. Sutherell on his new role and thank Dr. Willmore for his years
of outstanding service in student affairs.
