Distinguished Student Athletes
SLU-Madrid strives to support student athletes by offering flexible class schedules and personalized attention for students who study and train at the same time. Sports Director César Rioja has selected the following students to formally recognize their accomplishments in athletics and academics.
Iñaki Espantaleón Delgado
We congratulate Iñaki Espantaleón Delgado, a sophomore majoring History, on receiving the March Athlete of the Month Award for his excellence in soccer. Sports Director César Rioja selected Iñaki for this honor in recognition of his exemplary sportsmanship, team play, and well-rounded game, both on attack and on defense. Rioja states, "Iñaki is a hard worker and pushes himself to the maximum in everything he does, both athletically and academically."
Iñaki began playing soccer for a club team in Las Rozas in Madrid when he was 8 years old. He joined the SLU-Madrid team in 2016, and he also works as a coach.
Nico de Castro
Nicolás Bermúdez de Castro is an accomplished basketball player who is studying International Business at SLU-Madrid. He started playing basketball when he was eight years old and by the time he was 12, he began to get recruitment calls. He ended up playing for several high-level teams, including seven seasons with Madrid's MovistarEstudiantes. One highlight from Nicholas's basketball career was playing with Movistar's first team in preseason of the ACB, Spain's top professional basketball league.
Sports Director César Rioja nominated Nicolás for the award in recognition of his well-rounded play, attitude as a team player, and his dedication to combining his training and his studies.
Daria Sheremeteva is a competitive tennis player who is studying International Business at SLU-Madrid. Sports Director César Rioja nominated Daria for the award in recognition of her high-level game and endurance in both academic and athletic settings.
Daria has been playing tennis since she was four years old and has trained in both Russia and the United States. While living in the U.S., she played No.1 doubles (2013, 2014) and No.1 singles (2015) for Brownell Talbot, a college preparatory school in Omaha, Nebraska. She also participated in the state-level tournament for these three years.
Currently in Spain, Sheremeteva trains at the Tennis Federation of Madrid (FTM) and competes in tournaments. She also participates in FTM's rankings.
"I've really enjoyed getting to know Daria," comments Sports Director César Rioja. "She is very hardworking and serious, both in training and in competitions. She has a great attitude and is a very deserving recipient of this award." César serves as academic advisor to student athletes looking to train and compete while pursuing their degrees at SLU-Madrid.
In recognition of his excellence on the basketball court and in the classroom, Aleksandar Antic is the first student to be recognized as a distinguished athlete.
Director of Sports, César Rioja, nominated Aleksandar for this award in recognition of his talent and hard work on the basketball court with Movistar Estudiantes. César, a former professional basketball player himself, lauds Aleksandar, "He is a hard worker and pushes himself to the maximum in both his academic and athletic careers. His game is very complete in every aspect, as much in attack as in defense."
Aleksandar is a junior at SLU-Madrid. While he pursues a degree in International Business, he will be playing basketball with two teams: Olímpico and Movistar Estudiantes B. Growing up in Serbia, Aleksandar played on the Beovuk team, ranking No. 4 in the country in the under 14 age group and No. 2 in the under 16 age group. In high school Aleksandar moved to Michigan where he played on the Howell High School team.
