A Truly International Internship
As an intern in the British Embassy in Madrid, Elena Miller's daily tasks cannot be defined in one coverall statement. Whether researching the agritech and engineering sectors of the Spanish economy, updating the embassy CRM, or translating the legal tenders which allow British companies to bid on projects, her tasks take the shape of the embassy's daily needs. Each day is unique, perhaps the intrinsic value of being able to work in such a setting.
The Consulate also sent Elena on a trip to Alicante to get a first-hand look at how they serve the sizeable UK population residing in the coastal area. On site, she met with the Consular Team and learned about their alliances with British NGOs, observed their daily work providing emergency travel documents, helped conduct a meeting and prepared a media summary. She shadowed consular officers on visits to several hospitals and charities, and a funeral parlor.
A Spanish and American dual citizen, Elena has always been interested in international workplaces. At the British Embassy, she is surrounded by people from all over the world, not only British citizens. She has found it particularly gratifying to learn from such a diverse group of mentors and has enjoyed hearing about the personal journeys that have led each one of them to the British Embassy in Madrid.
"I have gained insight into what working in an embassy is like," comments Elena, who is currently a junior majoring in Business Administration/International Business and Spanish. "I have further developed my research and inter-personal skills as well as my language skills, since it is a completely bilingual workplace."
SLU-Madrid's internship program, directed by Ms. Patrice Burns, is booming. Students like Elena are gaining transnational experiences through their collaboration in embassies, businesses and non-governmental organizations. Partners include Repsol, Conde Nast, Gas Natural Fenosa, Vodafone, Fundación Sanders, and the U.S. and British embassies..
