Annual Convocation and Family Welcome
SLU-Madrid extended an official welcome to the 199 newest members of our community - the Class of 2021, new transfer students, University of Delaware World Scholars and IGNITE engineers - at the annual Convocation and Family Welcome.
After an invocation led by Rev. James O´Leary, S.J. (Chaplain), Master of Ceremonies Jaime Ortiz (Assistant Dean) introduced the speakers: Fred Pestello, Ph.D. (Saint Louis University President), Leila Fay Seffar (´17), Heidi Buffington (Director of Admissions), Marta Blázquez García (Student Government Association President), Kevin Ingram, Ph.D. (President of the Faculty Senate) and Paul Vita, Ph.D. (Director and Academic Dean).
Highlights from the ceremony included the heartfelt advice that Marta Blázquez shared with her new peers: "Make the best of each day at the university, because the years will fly by. Take advantage of this time to make the most amazing version of yourself." Ms. Buffington also awed the audience with anecdotes from admissions applications, demonstrating the depth and talent of the incoming students. And, in a video recording, President Pestello addressed the new students directly, urging them to each establish their own personal mission as they become members of SLU's united global community.
Director and Academic Dean Paul Vita, Ph.D. brought the ceremony to a close with words of empowerment: "May SLU-Madrid, as a safe space, support you as you change and provide you with an inclusive community, one that is tolerant, one that is energized by the search for truth and understanding-so that you, our future graduates, can change the world for the better."
