Fall 2017 Welcome Week
The SLU-Madrid Student Life staff, along with the Campus Ambassadors, have prepared an intensive and informative program of activities for new and returning students. If you haven't already done so, mark your calendars!
Orientation activities for new permanent students (first-year and transfer) will begin on campus with Academic Orientation in SIH Auditorium on Friday, September 1 at 9:00 a.m. Students will meet with faculty and academic advising staff and learn more about the Liberal Arts curriculum, different majors and the American university system. Directly after, the Student Life staff, Campus Ambassadors, and new students will depart for the mandatory Welcome Weekend. The orientation program, complete with a scavenger hunt, information sessions and time for sports and games, will take place at the Fray Luis de León Cultural Complex, a retreat center located in the scenic Guadarrama Mountains.
Study abroad students arriving at Terminal 4 at Barajas Airport on Saturday, September 2 will be greeted by a group of Admissions staff. Host-family housing opens for all students after 8:00 a.m. that day. The Welcome Sessions for study abroad students will take place in the auditorium of Colegio Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo, Calle de Juan Montalvo, 30 on Sunday, September 3 at 9.30 a.m.
SLU-Madrid buzzes with activities as students meet the faculty and settle into their fall semester routine. New and transfer student Convocation is at 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Saturday, September 2. Classes begin the following Monday, September 4 and academic advisors and faculty will be available to help students finalize their course schedules. The "Change of Registration" period ends on September 17.
During the first few weeks of the semester, Campus Ambassadors give tours of the neighborhood near campus as well as downtown Madrid. They also help students discover Madrid's tapas culture in the evenings. On the weekends, both new and returning students can learn about Spain's history and culture through University-sponsored excursions to the Monasterio de Piedra, Toledo, Salamanca and Segovia. Students can find out about clubs, sports, the theatre workshop and service opportunities at the Activities Fair on Friday, September 8.
The Mass of the Holy Spirit, a tradition among Jesuit universities since 1548, is scheduled for Wednesday, September 6. People of all faiths are welcome to celebrate the opening of the academic year, as the SLU-Madrid community prays for God's wisdom and guidance.
