SLU-Madrid's 50th Anniversary and Distinguished Alumni Celebration
SLU-Madrid is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Madrid Campus, founded in 1967. Alumni, faculty and staff across generations honored the milestone at the 50th Anniversary and Distinguished Alumni Celebration at the Iberostar Las Letras Gran Vía Hotel.
The ceremony opened with a warm welcome from Master of Ceremonies, Will Enriquez '13. Welcomed Dr. Marta Moreno (Econometrics) delivered the faculty address, telling the history of the campus while simultaneously incorporating her own personal story. Katherine Espinosa '13 and the Alumni Association Co-President Teresa Pérez-Piqueras '06 announced the winners of the Third Annual Distinguished Alumni Awards:
Emerging Leader Award
Annabelle Wilmott '14 (Political Science, Communication and International Studies) endeavors to improve the lives of those who have been displaced due to natural disasters and war. Upon graduation, she was awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Grant Assistantship in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, where she became interested in displacement and disaster management. While pursuing a Master's in International Development and Humanitarian Emergencies at the London School of Economics, she managed campaigns for the Amnesty International Society and served as a student consultant to the International Rescue Committee, leading campaigns on Refugees and Asylum Seekers' rights and Youth HIV/AIDS. She currently works as a Legal Research Analyst at an immigration law firm in New York. She specializes in cases of asylum and deportation.
Professional Achievement Award
Guillermo Albaladejo '04 (Aerospace Engineering) began his distinguished career with INTA, where he carried out mission analysis in earth observation and interplanetary projects before being promoted to Space Systems Engineering Manager. Guillermo later moved to the United States to work for Bastian Solutions as General Manager for Latin America, developing new businesses in emerging markets and opening offices in Brazil and Mexico. He now works as Bastian's International Business Director and recently opened their new European division in London and Madrid. Guillermo is an active member of the SLU community and recently hired two graduates to work at the Bastian Solutions office in Madrid. He also taught courses at SLU-Madrid, passing on his excitement for engineering in Mechanics of Solids.
After the ceremony, attendees enjoyed a catered cocktail-style dinner followed by cake and cava. SLU President Dr. Fred Pestello made a toast to the alumni, faculty and staff, honoring them for their hard work and encouraging them to continue to live the mission and make the world a better place. The Alumni Association is pleased to announce that all donations from the event will be used to establish the Saint Louis University - Madrid Alumni Scholarship Fund.
