The Season of Giving at SLU-Madrid
Holiday giving at SLU-Madrid kicked off this year with a food drive on Thanksgiving for the soup kitchen run by the Hermanas Terciarias Capuchinas de la Sagrada Familia. Then, students, faculty and staff donated gently used clothes and toiletries as part of the semi-annual clothing drive. BocaTalk, a student-led club which ministers to Madrid's homeless, distributed the items among those who sleep on the streets.
SLU-Madrid faculty and staff also took part in a toy drive to spread holiday joy to children who would not otherwise receive gifts. This year's collection will be distributed by the NGO Asociación AMPARA to children under the age of three who live in the Association's shared apartments while their mothers reintegrate back into society after having served time in prison for minor offenses. Thanks to the generosity of the faculty and staff, all of the 41 babies and toddlers served by the organization will receive gifts this year. As in previous years, the SLU-Madrid community exceeded the donation goals by collecting nearly 60 gifts; many of the children will receive two Christmas gifts this year! The toy drive is part of an initiative to provide outreach to these children who do not deserve to suffer for the mistakes made by others.
Thank you to all those who have helped make the holidays special for these children!
