English as a Second Language


The Purpose of ESL Program is:

  • To enhance academic reading and writing skills;
  • To improve students' study skills;
  • To provide academic support and advice;
  • To help students adapt to the U.S. university system.


Undergraduate Bridge Program Study Plan

1—Semester Undergraduate Bridge Program at SLU-Madrid

Entry Requirements

  • Secondary/high school degree or equivalent
  • 2.75 minimum GPA on 4.0 scale
  • Language Requirement
  • TOEFL iBT 75 (17+ subscores in reading and writing) or
  • SLU-Madrid TOEFL IPT 520 and SLUWE 3.5 (we only accept those taken at SLU - Madrid) or
  • IELTS 6.0 (5.5 subscores in reading and writing) or
  • PTEA 54

Degree Program Components

  • 120-128 credit hour program
  • 12-21 credit hours apply from Pathway
  • 99-116 credit hours remaining toward degree

Progression Requirements

  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • A grade of Satisfactory (S) in over 75% of ESL classes
  • A minimum increase of 30 points on the TOEFL PBT and 0.5 on the SLUWE per semester
  • Grade C or better in all classes counting toward major
  • No C-/D/F grades
