English Language Requirements


How do I demonstrate English proficiency?

English is the language of instruction of SLU-Madrid; thus, if you are not a native speaker of English, you must provide proof of English proficiency to enroll in our degree programs by presenting official results of examinations or certifications as outlined in the table below.

If your score meets these benchmarks, you will be placed in "ENGL 1500 The Process of Composition." If your score is lower than any of these benchmarks, you will be required to take a placement test upon arrival.

Direct Placement into English 1900/1920

Our advising staff will place both native and non-native speakers of English directly into ENGL 1900 Advanced Strategies of Rhetoric and Research or ENGL 1920 Advanced Writing for Professionals as outlined in the table below. Incoming students who wish to appeal their placement will be asked to take a writing test upon arrival. ENGL 1900 / ENGL 1920 are courses that require advanced academic literacy levels, and our goal is to ensure student success through best placement practices.
