Mathematics | Doctor of Philosophy Degree

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Saint Louis University offers graduate programs of advanced study and research leading to Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in mathematics. We have a high faculty-student ratio; our graduate students receive extensive individualized instruction. We provide an educational environment that is both nurturing and challenging. Ph.D. students work closely with faculty on individually tailored research programs. The department is engaged in undergraduate curriculum reform using leading-edge technology, and graduate students participate in this reform. We have a strong record of recruiting and graduating women and minority students.

  • Of every applicant, a committee examines and reviews each item of their application wholly.

Mathematics Application Review Process

All applications are reviewed by committee with about a six-week wait for decision-notification to applicants. All applicants have until April 15 to decide to accept.

  • About 25 percent of all applicants choose to attend SLU.
  • About 50 percent of math graduate students are women.
  • The program has a strong record of recruiting and graduating minority students.

Credit Hours/Coursework: Requirements for the degree include 36 credit hours beyond the M.A. The student must pass written exams in three major sub-fields of mathematics, plus a language exam that tests the student's ability to read mathematical works in French, German, or Russian. About the Mathematics Faculty: The mathematics faculty are internationally recognized in many areas of research including topology, differential geometry, algebra and analysis. Scholarships & Financial Aid: Applications should be submitted by January 1 for assistantship consideration review. A masters student can receive a total of up to two years of support from Saint Louis University as a teaching assistant. A Ph.D. student can receive a total of up to five years of support from Saint Louis University as a teaching assistant including support received while in the master's and the doctoral program. Renewal of the assistantship from year-to-year is not guaranteed, as the student needs to demonstrate sufficient progress towards the degree. Most M.A. and Ph.D. students are supported by teaching assistantships, which include a stipend, full tuition remission, and medical benefits. Students who are awarded teaching assistantships normally teach one course per semester; this allows them the freedom to energetically pursue graduate study while perfecting their teaching skills. | Financial Assistance  | Student Financial Services at SLU
