Our residents have the opportunity to train at 4 local hospitals: SSM Saint Louis University Hospital, SSM St. Mary’s Hospital, Des Peres Hospital, and SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. Both SSM Saint Louis University Hospital and SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital are busy Level-1 trauma centers. SSM St. Mary’s and our outpatient surgical center round out the training experience with a more elective surgical experience. Our residents average over 1,800 surgical cases during their residency, well over the national average of 1,400 cases. Our well established research program has aided residents in the publication of >60 peer-reviewed journals articles over the past 5 years and over 160 national, regional, and local conferences presentations in that same time period.
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and its diverse faculty and staff are dedicated to training residents who are poised to excel in top fellowship programs around the country and are well equipped to practice general or academic orthopaedics. The surgical experience we provide in combination with our well-developed didactic sessions and surgical skills curriculum reinforce acquisition and mastery of basic science concepts, anatomy, and hand skills critical to the development of well-rounded orthopaedic surgeons.

Welcome to our Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program. The specialty of orthopaedic surgery is exceptionally challenging, but also incredibly rewarding. For me, and I believe the other faculty in our Department, part of that reward is watching our SLU residents develop the knowledge, technical expertise, and professionalism required to care for patients with orthopaedic conditions. I am excited for each of you as you join our Residency Program and look forward to helping you prepare for your future orthopaedic careers.
