Student Fees Information/Update

In April 2017, a team that included student representation was formed to look at SLU’s student fee structure as a part of the ongoing Operational Excellence Program

Tasked with reducing the complexity of our student billing process, this team met numerous times and conducted extensive research, including looking at what other schools do. The team put together a set of recommendations that have been approved by President Pestello.

What’s Changing?

  • Simplified Structure: The number of fees is being consolidated from seven down to two — a University Fee and a Student Activity Fee, which will continue to be administered by the Student Government Association. This change will be reflected on student bills for the fall.
  • More Transparency: We will send you a report at the end of each year letting you know how funds collected through the University Fee were spent on services that support you.
  • More Responsive to Students’ Needs: A group of leaders that will include student representation will meet annually to recommend funding priorities that improve the student experience.

Background information about this initiative and a list of team members is available on the Operational Excellence website, where you’ll also find information and updates about other initiatives that are underway.

What Are Fees for the 2018-2019 Academic Year?

Below are amounts for the consolidated fees for 2018-2019 academic year. As part of the streamlined structure, the University Fee is based on enrollment status only, not whether you are an undergrad, grad or professional student.

Please note that these student fees are not applied to summer terms or students taking summer courses. We appreciate your understanding as we work through the transition to a structure during the next few months.

University Fee

  • Full-time students: $297/semester
  • Part-time students: $175/semester
  • Students in online or distance-learning academic programs: $50/eight-week term or $100/semester

Student Activity Fee (Administered by SGA)

  • Undergraduate students: $65/semester
  • Graduate and professional students: $30/semester

Why Did the University Fee Increase?

Separate from looking at the structure of our student fees, during SLU’s annual budgeting process the University also considered the amounts we charge.

Some key things to keep in mind:

  • Except for the technology fee increase voted on by students in 2016 to help support the Academic Tech Commons, SLU has not increased general University student fees in more than 10 years.
  • The cost of providing the services that student fees help fund has continually risen.
  • Our fees are, in many cases, significantly lower than those at peer institutions.

Based on this and other data, the decision was made to increase the University Fee. Dr. Pestello outlined tuition and other increases in a president’s message last month.

At SLU, we work very hard to deliver the best-possible student services in the most cost-effective way. We do regret the need to raise fees next year, but please know that these increases will help us meet the rising costs of supporting your educational experience at Saint Louis University.
