International Studies

Saint Louis University's undergraduate major in international studies explores intercontinental issues of diplomacy, human rights advocacy and socioeconomic relationships. You’ll take classes that will discuss the responsibilities of the world's multinational corporations. You’ll examine the impact of technological innovations. And you’ll gain a deeper understanding of ecological and environmental concerns.

Major in International Studies

SLU's undergraduate degree in international studies must be completed in combination with a second or third major. Popular choices include public health, political science, business, history, the modern languages, and earth and atmospheric sciences.

A wide variety of courses will fulfill your program requirements, from economics, political science and sociology to art history, philosophy and theology.

As part of your degree program, you will demonstrate proficiency in a modern language and complete an internship in international studies that can take place either in the United States or abroad.


The major in international studies is earned by fulfilling all five of the following requirements:

  • Proficiency in a modern language
  • Studying abroad
  • Completion of “ISTD 4910: International Studies Internship”
  • Completion of 31 credit hours of interdisciplinary coursework
  • A minimum 3.0 GPA at the time of graduation

Join Sigma Iota Rho

SLU’s chapter of Sigma Iota Rho, an honor society for international studies, provides students with programs such as faculty research presentations and social service events, as well as other fun, internationally oriented activities.
