Information for Faculty Teaching Online

To support faculty in designing and teaching online courses, the University provides a variety of resources including learning technologies, instructional design services, and professional development in effective online pedagogy and online course design.  This section provides information about the University’s standards and policies related to online education and faculty support resources.

The University’s Distance Education Committee (DEC), which has faculty representation from across the University, is charged with overseeing policies and processes to ensure high-quality distance education, including the development of the eight University Standards for Distance Education as described in the University Policy for Distance Education and Online Course Design Rubric. (Note: You must be logged into Google using your SLU username and password to access the rubric).

Ensuring Quality in Online Courses at SLU

In accordance with the University Policy for Distance Education and with Higher Learning Commission expectations, the Distance Education Committee (DEC) has developed institution-wide processes intended to ensure quality online course design and adequate faculty preparation for teaching online. Minimally, faculty should demonstrate they have received training in online pedagogy, design and build courses that are in alignment with the University’s Online Course Design Rubric, and have their courses pass an Online Course Design Peer Review Process. More information about each of these requirements can be found on the Ensuring Quality in Online Courses at SLU webpage.

If you are faculty teaching in the School for Professional Studies, please refer to the SPS webpage for specific requirements.
