Research Interests

He has been working in modeling, simulation and analysis of multi-functional materials across different length scales. Examples of these materials include shape memory alloys, ferroelectrics, piezoelectric materials and lithium ion battery. He is investigating how microstructures determine the macroscopic physical behaviors and how to design materials that exhibits special properties for various applications. He is also interested in the application of finite element analysis in other aspects of engineering such as devices, structures and vehicles.

He teaches courses on the board areas of solid mechanics, materials, mechanical design, modeling and computer simulations as well as introductory courses in dynamics, system and control.

He has also been developing computer tutorials for finite element analysis that parallels theory, analysis, design and optimization. The courses materials are adopted by the department of Mechanical Engineering and SAE Formula Car team at the University of Washington.

Community Work and Service

Chi Hou Lei joined the department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering in Fall 2016. Prior to joining the Saint Louis University, he was a research associate and instructor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Washington (Seattle) where he earned his doctoral degree.
